I say prayer in a non-denominational sense.
Saying a small prayer of gratitude is a great way to set the tone of the day.
It doesn't even have to spoken in words (although that does add a good amount of power). A feeling in the heart, an idea in the mind, or simply acknowledging that each breath is a gift, will ground you in gratitude.

Prana, or breath/lifeforce, connects the body, mind, and consciousness. Balanced breath is rhythmic. When we are out of balance breath is irregular, maybe even jerky.
Yoga and Ayurveda offers several breathing techniques. One of the easiest to access during times of stress is the "equal parts breath."
Regulate your breath to be the same quality and quantity by counting to four or six on the inhalation and on the exhalation. Let the counting relax the breath so that it is the same on both sides.

This simple meditation is so powerful.

Inhale and think, see, or feel the word "So."
Exhale and think, see, or feel the word "Hum."

3. Balance Pitta by eating cooling, non-spicey foods, avoiding excessive heat (Hot Yoga, not so good) and exercise during cooler parts of the day.

What is Kapha, you ask? Kapha is one of three Doshas, or energies/function principles. I'll go into more detail in the next three posts, but for now...
Kapha = Earth
Pitta = Fire
Vata = Wind
Humans have all three, all of the time. Usually, though, one is dominant, and when things are really out of balance, you're likely experiencing the effects of one dosha being very dominant or very lax.
The doshas are complex and present in every aspect of our human experience, as well as in the universe. I know that sounds big, but stick around and keep an eye out for the next half of the twelve days of self care.

Do you remember my post on the tongue scraper?i mentioned that winter is a time for building. So it is so important to keep our digestion and absorption in tip top shape - or at least in working order! Ghee to the rescue. It's lubricating and helps things move along!

Abhyanga, AH-bee-ang-HA, Self Massage.
Feels so good, and is so good for the skin. But it's also great for moving lymph, and telling your body "thank you." We are in a time of gratitude, so be sure you extend that to your physical self, too!!

Nasal washing was a game changer for me!! And it's not just the feeling of having clear sinuses, but the ritual of heating the water, letting it cool, and then using the net pot to clear out the gunk. I know not everyone will enjoy this practice, but luckily there are several other options! Check out saline sprays in your local pharmacy. Or, come and join my for my workshop on December 31st and we'll go in depth!

Origin Story

I’ve been a group fitness instructor since 2005. I started teaching Yoga in 2007. But it wouldn’t be until after my daughter was born in 2014 that I would try my hand at starting my own classes. It started with some great girl friends, and one dude, in a small space in Des Moines, Iowa.

Now I am in a space that is shared by creative healing practitioners. I have developed my own personal practice, which I am able to share with my students. Although I am excited to work with folks of all ages, my primary focus is working with the aging population.
