🎉 Looking for a refreshing summer drink idea?

Try making a kidney-friendly mocktail! 🍹

Step 1: Base Liquid – Start with 4 oz. of a kidney-friendly base liquid, such as sparkling water, ginger ale, pineapple juice, or cranberry juice.

Step 2: Acid – Add 1 oz. of acid to your base liquid, such as lemon or lime juice.

Step 3: Sweetener – Add 1/2 oz. of sweetener of your choice, such as agave, honey, simple syrup, or a splash of fruit juice.

Step 4: Garnish – Add a garnish of your choice, such as a citrus wedge, mint leaves, cucumber slice, berries, or fresh herbs/spices.

Personally, I love a sparkling cranberry lime mocktail: 4 oz. sparkling lime water, 1 oz. lime juice, a splash of cranberry juice, and a lime garnish.

✅ Pick a Salad Base: Start with lettuce, kale, arugula, spinach or cabbage.

✅ Add Veggies: Choose from a variety of veggies like carrots, cucumber, bell pepper, onion, tomatoes, celery, or any of your favorites.

✅ Add Protein: Try tofu, beans, nuts, seeds, edamame, or lentils for a plant-based protein boost.

✅ Add Extras: Sprinkle on berries, dried fruit, herbs, garlic, or grains.

✅ Finish with a kidney- friendly Vinaigrette. Use this simple formula: 60% oil, 30% acid, and 10% other flavors.

✅ Blueberries are low in potassium, phosphorus, and sodium so they are a great choice for a kidney friendly eating plan.

As a dietitian who specializes in kidney nutrition, I’m a firm believer in the power of prevention. By making small, healthy changes today, you can protect your kidneys for years to come!

Here are 6 simple tips to help keep your heart strong while managing CKD.

1️⃣ Know Your Numbers: Regularly check your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. Keeping these in a healthy range helps your heart and kidneys stay strong!

2️⃣ Cut Back on Sodium: Too much salt can hurt your heart and kidneys. Use fresh herbs, spices, lemons, limes, or fruit vinegars to make your meals taste amazing instead!

3️⃣ Choose Healthy Fats and Oils: Healthy oils like olive oil, avocado oil, and nut oils are great for your heart. You can use them in dressings and cooking to support both your heart and kidney health.

4️⃣ Manage Stress: Stress isn’t good for your heart or kidneys. Try activities like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to stay calm and relaxed.

5️⃣ Eat a Healthy Diet: Fill your plate with fruits, veggies, whole grains, healthy proteins, and healthy fats. A balanced diet helps both your heart and kidneys stay in great shape!
