⚠️In the United States, roughly 1,300 people are killed and more than 2 million are injured each year due to domestic violence.
This National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we honor the lives lost by fighting for the living.
Domestic violence is not rare. It’s happening in every community, across every income level and every background. No one is immune—but everyone can be part of the solution.
Start by believing the person when they say they are being brutalized or abused. Listen without judgment. Avoid victim blaming and asking questions like “Why didn’t you leave?” Domestic violence victims don’t “just leave,” as they are most at risk of getting killed when they attempt to do so.
So, instead of giving unsolicited advice, ask them how you can help them. Connect them to safe resources like the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233)—never pressure them, but support their choices and safety plan.
However, if the person is in immediate danger, call 911 right away.
Your compassion and support could be the lifeline that changes someone’s story. Real change begins when we refuse to look away.
