Women's History Month - In 1825 an English surgeon described hiring women to treat patients suffering from lameness and diseased joints with rubbing and frictions. The occupation of "rubber" or "medical rubber" was specifically suited to women and gave "independent women working outside of the home...a viable means of livelihood." This was an important development for working women in Europe and North America, and a milestone in the history of the massage therapy profession. (Benjamin p 65-66)
