Here is a fun-to-read article about how children think about what they already know, a process known as metacognition. In it, Alicia Forsberg discusses a child's working memory and how that relates to their ability to carry out cognitive functions. Our UCCS cognitive development lab is currently conducting a study related to this article, working with metacognition and studying what children think about what they already know. If you and your child are interested, see the previous post on our page for more information!

It has long been known that the human brain needs essential nutrients during its growth in order to build structure.
However, for those living in a place of food insecurity, ingesting these nutrients can be a challenge, and children are in danger of developing cognitive impairments.
As a response, various food based interventions have been developed that focus on delivering heavy doses of these nutrients to children in need of them.
In their article The Effects of Nutritional Interventions on the Cognitive Development of Preschool-Age Children: A Systematic Review, Marina Roberts and team perform a meta-analysis looking at the effectiveness of these interventions, and whether or not there was any observable increase in cognitive functioning following an intervention.

The developing human brain requires all essential nutrients to form and to maintain its structure. Infant and child cognitive development is dependent on adequate nutrition. Children who do not receive sufficient nutrition are at high risk of exhibiting impaired cognitive skills. This systematic rev...
