I have a question for you to ponder today: What are you committed to?
I had a conversation earlier with a friend where we were discussing the idea of commitment and what it means to commit more deeply to something or someone.
After our conversation, I couldn't stop thinking about commitment. And so I decided to write about it.
So what are you committed to? The easiest way to answer that question is to notice what you spend your time on. Where we put our time is where we are committed. Even if we may say we want to be committed to x, y, or z, if we aren't putting time there, we aren't actually committed.
Commitment is not easy. It takes time, energy, sometimes money, and it takes up space in our brains and lives.
Commitment has been one of my greatest lessons in the last few years. First, I have learned how to consciously commit to another person, as my relationship with my partner has grown and we've continually made decisions to commit our lives more deeply to each other. Second, I have learned deeper commitment and devotion to my work, staying committed to everything it takes to offer the healing spaces that I create. And third, the work of my own homecoming, to my body, womb and soul, has asked me to commit deeper to tending to myself and my needs.
I also want to touch on the other side of commitment, answering the question, “What have I been committed to that I don't want to be committed to? Whether because I'm giving it my time, money, mental space, or otherwise?” I've contemplated this question a lot in the past few seasons of life, working to unweave commitments that I've been in by default, that don't serve where I am headed or who I want to be. I have been committed to habits that kept me stuck, to thought patterns that kept me struggling, to identities that were familiar but constricting. I've been committed to being right instead of to growth, to surviving instead of thriving, to other people's dreams instead of my own. As I unwound these commitments and poured my energy into what I really care about, I noticed how much easier it became to live a life of devotion and to be present to what is important.
Now, I invite you to take a turn with these questions. What are you committed to? Where are you committed to things by default, that aren't fulfilling? Where would you like to create deeper commitment in your life?
As we contemplate commitment, I want to take a moment to remind you of my mentorship offering, HOMECOMING. This is a mentorship that is rooted in commitment. To come home to yourself body, womb and soul is an alchemical process. It takes time, energy and devotion. In short, homecoming takes commitment. The length of time that this mentorship takes reflects this as well: 9 to 10 months, a cycle of gestation. Because we need time to rebuild and rebirth our foundations and come home to self. This process doesn't happen overnight. It takes consistent daily, weekly, monthly practices. It takes choice, responsibility and devotion to yourself and your path. It requires you to really want to change and create space for your homecoming. The body responds to consistency, the womb responds to care, and the soul responds to presence. The one thing that we need to create consistency, care and presence is time. And to give something time, we must stay committed.
HOMECOMING will teach you how to stay committed, even when the journey gets bumpy, even when the old patterns are getting loud. We don't wake up one day understanding how to commit to ourselves – we learn it, day by day. And the person most deserving of your commitment is you – your body, womb, soul deserve your time, energy and commitment.
In short: YOU deserve your own homecoming. The secret to a life you love is found by learning to live fully embodied in who you are, why you're here, and with full access to your power to create and share your gifts in the world.
