I have a difficult time expressing my particular belief system in the Witch/Pagan community. This post from Alicia Hack may have come directly out of my own head.
I do not follow the concept of reincarnation, however, I also do not discount it. I DO believe that we have a family group that has been together since the beginning of time. Sometimes we're born outside this group but become intertwined with them here in this realm. Most of the time I believe we're born by blood into the same family group that surrounded us before coming to this plane . Those who came before, the Ancestors, still surround us, guide us and teach us if we listen. They are constantly reminding us of who we are and where we came from. I don't mean our heritage or countries of origin, but our pre-birth family existence. They love us and have loved us for millennia These are they I look to. Count on. Ask advice of. Cherish. I do not follow deities or written religious texts. My guides and teachers are my Ancestors and I'm overjoyed to have found them.

This is the Way it is, and the way it always has, and will be

I started a quest a few years ago, a journey to discover my Ancestory, it is a long and laborious undertaking and not all of it is welcome
I am very open minded though so I do not like to leave the Stone unturned, so to speak
But that said, it is also a wonderful journey to follow, for it brings a clarity to why we are who we are
It gives pathway going back and back as far as we can manage, and when the facts run out, there is still a trail of breadcrumbs that can take you even further
This and trust in your instinct and those from spirit that guide you
This takes a leap of faith

Now, working with Ancestors isn't a simple choice, even if you research and then try to contact a specific Ancestor dont be surprised if it isn't the person you wanted that comes to you
Please go carefully with starting any work with spirits, there are pretenders that see your eagerness to connect and they will take the proverbial, given half a chance
Anchor yourself, tread lightly for those spirits that draw close may be anchored themselves by the poison they wish to share with those unsuspecting eager beavers

If you like Altar space, do you also have an Ancestor space? Just a picture of the loved one might do, a candle by its side and a herb you have been drawn to, or that was a favourite to your loved one in a dish next to it
Make sure the herb is fresh when you are ready to call to them for they smell it as you suddenly smell them
Light the candle next to the picture for this is the one you chose for them alone
Your family have no business being a part of the other thing you do
Well those forces desire different rituals my friend
The old energies that desire blood, nails and hair are not needed for Ancestors spirits, they know those already don't they?

Call to your children who were taken before they could draw breath, or who breathed for a short time, for they are your Ancestor's blood and they will guide them in
Turning to Blood Ties, and looking through that hole in the Stone to See, to Smell, to Taste the past is your Memory Magic
Your instinct is your greatest ally so don't deny it, for it is also your protector
Your instinct drew you to the herbs of protection, you knew them from ago for it is recorded in your DNA which is as old as this very Earth
Your blood is your tether to the past, the present and the future

Everything you ever need to know begins to makes sense when you know where to look, as those dark eyes and glowing smiles come into your peripherals you recognise them from your memory that you forgot you had
Déjavu is not just a thought you had twice

You are now ready to find those who knew you before you were born, and will welcome you after you enter their Halls when your moment on this particular timeline is done

After all, Your bones are not the end!

Note; you don't have to physically research Ancestors, for you may just follow the crumbs without it, but I must admit I found it helpful

Attachments and Boundaries meet where both lines are blurred. For one to take hold, the other must be weak or neglected. Smudging and Clearing are all very well, but neither is effective when the practitioner is merely going through the motions, and attachments are like Mealy Bugs in a greenhouse. Easily spread and difficult to eradicate.
Smudging is a process, like dressing for battle, where each item is laid out before you in the order of placement on the body. Each is an important step, and once begun, cannot be considered complete until the last lace is tied.
There are as many reasons for Cleansing and clearing as there are personal recipes for Bundles and preferences of plants used. Sage and Palo Santo are not endemic in every country, nor do they have the same Spiritual values as other cultures preferred species. However for the purpose of this, we will assume Sage Bundles are being used.

Bringing home a new Scrying Bowl for example is a good place to begin. Placing it in a safe site within your Sacred Space, you would lay out your Bundle and lighter, considering the purpose for which the bowl will be used, and under the assumption that many other hands had touched it before yours.
Your home is your Boundary, and you have just introduced an item into it which may or may not have been created by a person to whom the very idea of attachments is a load of BS. An open invitation for Energy to lie in wait.... brooding. Your Instincts will already be telling you if anything is wrong.
Focus on your Sage, picking it up and applying flame to it. Do it again, because we all know the first time it goes out....
Visualisation is key to Seeing how the bowl will be used, communicating to Sage where to begin and moving the Bundle until no part of the bowl has been untouched by smoke. Concentrate, for what you are doing is an Ancient Sacred Rite and should be treated as such.
Speak aloud your intention of use, and how you will protect your Energy, your Boundary, and your chosen Tools.
You may wish to leave the bowl on the workspace and move through the house, sealing your Boundaries shut again.
I often sprinkle my own Black Salt on a new item and wash clean in Spring Water. Depends on what my gut is saying.
Any successful Smudging and Clearing will raise goosebumps as soon as the Air is clear.

Attachments can come into play on other people, Tools, or from the ground beneath your feet. Always be mindful of what you are feeling and learn to trust it. Cleanse often, and always thank your Tools.
You are no different than any other Spiritual Leader with the Tools to make sure you are safe. Use them wisely. Protect your Boundaries and seek help from others if an Attachment is tougher than you can manage alone.

Don't take yourself too seriously, but understand that Ritual has it's place in life.

Witchcraft, by its very nature is dark and dirty. Have we forgotten so much already of the blood that recycles itself through our time here?
There will be no photos here of the Lunar eclipse, for we should have been out beneath it, whispering back along those rivers of Energy all around us. Sacrifices were to cruel indifferent Gods to ensure harvest and offspring, and parts of us STILL smell the smoke and the mud. My mother remembers her grandmother shrieking in horror if she saw the Moon through glass, and she bowed to the Dark Moon without fail. THESE are the ways we have lost, and the meanings behind them.
The truth about Witchcraft can be found on a wild rocky beach, beneath the black water of a forest pool, and in the volcanic glass that sits beside your front door, keeping your home safe. Witchcraft cannot be found in the many pictures of pretty Spells, or hair accessories for the "fashionable" witch in your life. Witchcraft can be found in every crease on your face, and in every tear you bottle.
We cannot be Crafting every moment of life, or we would lose touch with what makes it Sacred. No longer do I make Moon Water to languish in dark cupboards, for the water in my blood IS Moon Water, and I stand beneath it's reflected Light to Charge myself. My heartbeat is the Storm, like rain drumming on the roof, and I add that to my Moon Water Self. We are all in part the very things we desire to own, and no photography of your Altar will change that.
Concentrate upon the Spell, for once words are free they cannot be caged again.

Remember what drew you to the whispers in the Fire, and find out where your place is in all of this.
Witchcraft has a language. You speak it when you begin to spin beneath the Sunlight, warming the top of your head and your Ghost Fontanelle into which Spirit speaks...
You speak it when you collect seeds to ensure the supply of flowers for insects. You speak it when you awaken at 3am, afraid to look above you at the Shadow you can FEEL watching. You speak it when you make bottles and bags, poppets and boxes that nobody else will ever lay eyes on.
You speak it when you look into your own eyes without judgment and acknowledge what you are, accepting every damn part of Self as yours.
When that voice falls silent and all you have left are those pretty pictures in your phone that you took, walk back into the crevices of memory and wait. When you hear it again, respect it. Your Shadow will return. Say it... I am not only a Witch when I am practicing Witchcraft. I am a Witch with every breath I take.

Let's be honest. Sometimes Spirits are hard work, and they can leave their sadness in your bones. There is no shame, especially at this time of year, in putting your earphones in with your playlist running and popping a Lorazepam. Not every night, but occasionally we need a break from the hey hi hello brigade.
We are Witches. Not machines. Remember that first and foremost. It took me a long time to be comfortable with taking a break, and now without make-up the bags under my eyes have developed wheels.
Self care means saying NO. Put up your wall and ignore the sneaky ones trying to circumnavigate it. They won't get all the way in if you did it right, and it's YOUR wall, YOUR creation through hard work and visualisation mixed with Magic. So I have faith in your wall/drawbridge/treefort/fire filled moat, giant fluffy trojan horse.
Nobody else but you has the tools you need to protect Self in a Spiritual manner. I'm not talking about Black Salt, Tourmaline or the Obsidian arrowhead. I'm talking about what's INSIDE. Right here.

Digging deeply for protection will allow you to dig more deeply into your Crafting without the risk of hitchhikers, although Medium work always has a risk factor no matter how careful you are. Trust your gut and have everything in place before beginning, although fifty bucks says you'll still have to run out of your Sacred Space to fetch something....
Magic is like the Aurora Borealis. Always moving, shifting, changing, and we need to move with it. That last Spell you wrote for health may not work this time, because the parameters have shifted. Instinct is half of what we are and how we work. Make friends with it.
There are those who will tell you the human experience is dangerously flawed, and the only safe Magic is by the book, using repetitive restrictive ritual. I am not going to say their way is wrong, that's not up to me. But I AM going to say it would be incredibly difficult for those of us who work with Nature, Spirit and Universe to find a place in our constantly morphing Spiral for ANY rigid regime without being left far behind. Not to mention the dangers of being trapped.
I worship a stick as much as I worship the Elements and Ancestor. That is MY way, and you have yours. Be careful it doesn't get swallowed up by the ideas of others...

Take a break, and that half formed apparition behind you will sigh, regroup, and try again when you lower your wall to see what she requires of you.
