So often people fall into the trap of thinking if they skip steps they’ll get to their goal faster. But that’s flawed thinking when it comes to the human body.

Although every body is different, we are the same in that our bodies generally prefer slow adaptation rather than drastic changes when it comes to physiological adaptation (ie gaining strength, increasing endurance, or recovering from injuries).

Instead of trying to skip steps, focus on laying the groundwork at your current level so you can be successful as you continue to progress.

It’s easy to become so focused on the end goal that we overlook the progress we make along the way. I see this often with people on their healing journey — they miss the small signs of improvement.

* Sleeping through the night without waking from pain.
* Carrying your child again without discomfort.
* Running a few steps without feeling immediate pain.

One of my favorites: managing symptoms without needing physical therapy.

As physical therapists, we often joke that we have the worst business model because our goal is for clients to not need us anymore. But that’s exactly what it’s all about: helping our clients get better. When someone can manage their symptoms with less – or no – PT, that’s a huge win. It means we’re doing our job right.

An injured body has different needs than a non-injured body.

Also, flare-ups happen. The question is, how will you respond?

Ever found yourself stretching or massaging a muscle over and over again, only for it to “tighten” right back up?

Believe it or not, a muscle can feel tight without actually being tight… and it’s pretty common. In these cases, the feeling of tightness is only a symptom, often the result of weakness or compensation.

If you’ve been stretching a tight and cranky muscle without relief, it might be time to find a movement professional to help you find the real root of the problem. Find the real cause of the problem and that “tightness” might just disappear for good.

A little February glimmer — this orchid was a sweet surprise and a bright spot in a cold and crazy month. Sometimes these small moments and acts of kindness are what matter most. Here’s to slowing down to notice and appreciate them.

It can be so tempting to want to “make up for lost time” when you’re finally able to start training again after being sick. But I recommend a different approach.

Your body has been working hard to fight whatever made you sick, so it’s been running a marathon while you’ve been in bed.

Instead of hitting it hard with high intensity workouts or even picking up at the same level you stopped at, take it easy to start.

Start light and see how you feel. If that goes well, progressively increase from there. Frequently check in with yourself on how you’re feeling and make adjustments as needed.

Give yourself time to recover after being sick and set yourself up for success.

Your back and core are meant to work together, but when the core isn’t pulling its weight, the back picks up the slack.

A strong, well-trained core can help keep the back healthy. Pay attention to the core in order to give the spine the support it deserves!

The IT band is a thick band of fascia (connective tissue) that helps to stabilize the knee — it’s not stretchy like a muscle. When the glutes are not doing their job properly, often due to weakness, this can lead to increased tension at the IT band and even discomfort at the knee.

Instead of trying to stretch the IT band like you might a muscle, you may find that strengthening your glutes is more productive.

Give the glutes the support they need, and you may find the IT band won’t have to work so hard.

By the time overuse injuries become painful, they have likely been building for quite some time. The pain is just the final alarm bell — your body asking for attention.

Try not to ignore the early signs. But if you do miss them, make sure to address them as soon as you notice the problem.
