Today is Memorial Day. an opportunity to honor fallen soldiers and the sacrifices they’ve made throughout U.S. history. It became a federal holiday (and a three-day weekend) in 1971, but its origins go back to the post-Civil War era, when it was known as Decoration Day. One of the earliest recorded observations took place in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1865, during the final days of the war.
