📊 '2025 State of Grandfamilies' REPORT

Generations United published "The Costs of Caregiving: Why Supporting Grandfamilies & Kinship Care is Good for Children and Our Nation's Economy" with striking findings:

• 2.5 million children are being raised in grandfamilies nationwide
• Grandfamilies SAVE the government $10.5 billion annually by keeping children safely with family and out of foster care
• For every 1 child in kinship foster care, 19 more are raised by kin outside the system without formal support
• Most caregivers step in unexpectedly on fixed incomes, sacrificing retirement savings

The push pin on “retirement” was pulled unexpectedly.
Now the board is filled with appointments, IEPs, school routines and activities.
It’s not what I envisioned… but it’s where I’m needed.
If you’re like me—navigating the tension between what was supposed to be and what must be now—you’re not alone.
We don’t talk enough about the emotional pivot required when grandparents become full-time caregivers.
But I am talking about it.
