We know emergencies are never planned — but if your pet needs urgent care that isn’t life-threatening, weekday daytime hours are often the best time to come in.

Evenings and weekends tend to be our busiest times, so if your pet’s condition allows, visiting us during the day Monday–Friday can make your experience smoother and quicker.

That said, we’re always open 24/7.

Yesterday was a great day for our team! Back in February, 13 year old Cory came to us with a broken hind leg. Given the nature of the injury, the best path of treatment was amputation of his leg. At age 13 it wasn’t clear how well Cory would do with 3 legs but his devoted parents wanted to give him the best shot for recovery. While in our care, Cory underwent the surgery and began to heal, but was slow to start walking. Cory went home 2 days after surgery and yesterday his parents brought him by to show off his walking skills! Cory has healed beautifully and is adapting to life on 3 limbs. We are so thankful you brought him by for a visit and it absolutely made our day! Thank you so much for sharing his progress with us and for trusting us with his care. We don’t often see the happier side of things and you brought a smile to the faces of everyone in the hospital, Cory!

Cats may look quiet, but they’re actually incredible vocalist! In fact, cats can make almost 100 different sounds — from meows to chirps, purrs, growls, and dramatic yowls. They have nearly triple the vocal range of dogs!

Cats use their wide vocal range to communicate with us (they rarely meow at each other), and get our attention. Are you able to differentiate your own cat's sounds?

March is National Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month.

No one ever wants to deal with a poisoning scare, but if something happens, acting fast really makes a difference. One of the best things you can do is keep important numbers saved in your phone—your regular vet, our hospital, and a poison control hotline—so you’re never scrambling in an emergency.

We’re here for you 24/7, always:
📞 Southern Rockies Animal Emergency + Specialty : (719) 473-0482

Other 24/7 resources that can help:
📞 ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: (888) 426‑4435
📞 Pet Poison Helpline: (855) 764‑7661
(consultation fees may apply for helpline calls)

Give your pets a little extra love this week, and maybe double‑check that the plants in your home are pet‑safe.

When your pet’s condition is changing fast, immediate action matters.
Emergencies don’t always start with dramatic symptoms — but they can become serious in a very short amount of time. Waiting to “see how things go” may allow a treatable issue to escalate into something far more dangerous.

Seeking care at the first sign of worsening symptoms gives your pet the best chance of avoiding sudden deterioration, unmanaged pain, or complications that develop quietly but quickly.

If your pet is declining, becoming more uncomfortable, or simply doesn’t seem stable, don’t wait for things to get worse. Emergency care is available 24/7, and getting help now can make all the difference.

A good reminder for everyone! We appreciate everyone looking out for stray kitties, but a lot of times mom isn’t too far away. If you do find any injured strays, we will always take them if the Humane Society is closed and treat if need be and hold them until the Humane Society opens. Thank you for looking out for our furry friend community!

Feline hyperthyroidism is common in older cats — but it can be easy to miss. Symptoms often start subtly and progress slowly, which is why early recognition is so important. With timely diagnosis and treatment, most cats can make a full recovery.

Keep an eye out for these common signs:
🐈 Excessive thirst or increased urination
🐈 Increased appetite paired with weight loss
🐈 Restlessness, pacing, or increased vocalization
🐈 Changes in coat quality—dullness, matting, or hair loss
🐈 Vomiting and/or diarrhea

If your cat is showing any of these symptoms, Southern Rockies Animal Emergency & Specialty is here to help.

✨ We are the only hospital south of Denver offering I‑131 treatment — the gold‑standard therapy for feline hyperthyroidism — giving pets in our region access to advanced, targeted care close to home.

Your cat’s health matters, and early action can make all the difference. Let our experienced team guide you through diagnosis and treatment with expertise and compassion.

Common Pet Emergency Symptoms You Should Never Ignore
Some symptoms speak louder than words — and when they do, they signal your pet may need urgent care.

Here are some of the most common signs that warrant an emergency visit:
🚨 Repeated vomiting or diarrhea
🚨 Trouble breathing or breathing that suddenly looks different
🚨 Sudden, severe pain or crying out
🚨 Inability to get comfortable or constant restlessness
🚨 Collapse, weakness, or difficulty standing
🚨 Symptoms that keep worsening instead of improving

These patterns often indicate something serious is happening internally — and timely evaluation can make all the difference for your pet’s outcome.
Our emergency team is available 24/7 to assess urgent symptoms and provide immediate care when minutes matter.
