Meet Sarah! Sarah is one of the techs you will have the pleasure of meeting if you come in to see us during the day at the beginning of the week! Sarah is always learning new things and looking to grow as a technician.

"My name is Sarah, and I've been with Southern Rockies for 4.5 years. I've always known I wanted to work with animals, but just wasn't sure what options were available to me or how to get started. Finally, I decided I was tired of feeling unfulfilled in my career, so I took the leap into vet-med and haven't regretted a single day since. I love the chaos of the ER, the satisfaction of seeing patients leave better than they came in, and thankful that I can provide comfort to those who aren't as fortunate. As cliche as it might sound, my kid really inspired me to follow my dream, and in turn, he's inspired not only by me, but my whole team, to be a vet tech at Southern Rockies one day. I've never worked with such a compassionate group, and they truly do feel like a family. I'm incredibly lucky to be a part of providing the best care possible for our patients."

Thank you for being such an important member of our team and our hospital! We appreciate you!

Meet our beginning of the week, Vet Tech Shift Lead, Alyssa! Alyssa's caring and compassion, and ability to lead and direct her team, makes her an invaluable part of our team and we are so lucky to have her! If she has ever taken care of one of your furry family members and you have had the chance to speak with her, you know she truly cares about every patient!

"My name is Alyssa. I’ve been working in veterinary medicine for the past eight years, and it’s truly become a part of who I am. I’ve had the privilege of working in shelter medicine, general practice, and now emergency medicine, which I fell in love with over five years ago and haven’t looked back since.

There’s something incredibly special about caring for animals who can’t tell you what’s wrong. It requires patience, intuition, and a deep understanding of their needs—and that challenge is what inspires me every day. I feel so grateful to be able to comfort, treat, and heal the pets who come through our doors, and to help get them back home to the people who love them most.

Every day I get to do what I love—whether that’s taking x-rays, drawing blood, placing IV catheters, or just sitting with a patient who needs a little extra love. This job can be tough, but it’s also one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. I can’t imagine doing anything else."

Meet one of our fantastic overnight techs, Tori. If you come in late at night at the end of the week, Tori will be here dedicating her time to taking exceptional care of your furry family members!

"My name is Victoria and I'm currently working as a veterinary technician while going to school to one day get my license. I started at Southern Rockies over 4 years ago as a hospital assistant and instantly fell in love with veterinary medicine. I have always had a deep love for animals mixed with the ever-changing environment of emergency medicine, I knew I found my place."

Tori, thank you for being a dedicated member of our team and for all that you do for our patients!!

Meet Kevin! Kevin was brought in to Southern Rockies by his mom after she noticed some blood in his stool and vomiting. After a physical exam by Dr. Miller, along with radiographs and blood work, Kevin was diagnosed with Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome or AHDS. AHDS is a sudden onset of severe bloody diarrhea in dogs that can be potentially life threatening. Kevin was hospitalized on fluids and medications and after 17 hours, he was able to go home and continue his recovery. Today he is back to his goofy, loving self thanks to his mom for recognizing something was wrong and acting quickly! We are so thankful you chose to bring him to us and for the privilege to provide care for Kevin when he needed it most!

This past Saturday, we had the honor of participating in the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region's Pawtoberfest with our sister hospital Uintah Pet Emergency! Thank you to everyone who stopped by our tables and learned about our services, or just said hi! It was a wonderful event and we enjoyed meeting you all and your furry family members. We will be back next year for sure!

Seizures don’t always look the same—sometimes they involve full-body convulsions, but they can also be more subtle (like facial tremors, sudden movements, or unusual barking).

If your dog has a seizure, remember:

✅ Stay calm—your pet can sense your energy.
✅ Time the seizure and note symptoms (a video can help your vet).
✅ Don’t restrain them or go near their mouth—you could get bitten.
✅ Keep them safe: move them from stairs, cushion their head, and gently comfort them.
✅ Know they aren’t conscious or in pain, even if it looks scary.
✅ Give us a call as soon as possible after an occurrence.

🚨 If a seizure lasts over 2–3 minutes or your dog has multiple seizures in 24 hours, come see us immediately.
