Meet Kevin! Kevin was brought in to Southern Rockies by his mom after she noticed some blood in his stool and vomiting. After a physical exam by Dr. Miller, along with radiographs and blood work, Kevin was diagnosed with Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome or AHDS. AHDS is a sudden onset of severe bloody diarrhea in dogs that can be potentially life threatening. Kevin was hospitalized on fluids and medications and after 17 hours, he was able to go home and continue his recovery. Today he is back to his goofy, loving self thanks to his mom for recognizing something was wrong and acting quickly! We are so thankful you chose to bring him to us and for the privilege to provide care for Kevin when he needed it most!

This past Saturday, we had the honor of participating in the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region's Pawtoberfest with our sister hospital Uintah Pet Emergency! Thank you to everyone who stopped by our tables and learned about our services, or just said hi! It was a wonderful event and we enjoyed meeting you all and your furry family members. We will be back next year for sure!

Seizures don’t always look the same—sometimes they involve full-body convulsions, but they can also be more subtle (like facial tremors, sudden movements, or unusual barking).

If your dog has a seizure, remember:

✅ Stay calm—your pet can sense your energy.
✅ Time the seizure and note symptoms (a video can help your vet).
✅ Don’t restrain them or go near their mouth—you could get bitten.
✅ Keep them safe: move them from stairs, cushion their head, and gently comfort them.
✅ Know they aren’t conscious or in pain, even if it looks scary.
✅ Give us a call as soon as possible after an occurrence.

🚨 If a seizure lasts over 2–3 minutes or your dog has multiple seizures in 24 hours, come see us immediately.

Kera is a true lifesaver!!

This sweet girl came in this week to donate blood which we were immediately able to transfer to another hospital in town to save one of their patients. We are so grateful for Kera and her family for allowing her to be a part of our blood donor program!

Not only do these donations save lives in our hospital and others across town, but our donors receive other perks for being part of our program, which is overseen by one of our knowledgeable and experienced doctor's to ensure our donors remain healthy and safe as well! If you are interested in learning more about our program, please call us at (719)473-0482.

Feline hyperthyroidism is a common condition in older cats, but it can be difficult to spot as symptoms are often subtle and start slowly. When caught early, most cats can fully recover with treatment. It’s important to keep an eye out for the most common symptoms:

• Excessive thirst and increased urination
• Increased appetite and weight loss
• Anxious behavior, including pacing, yowling, and restlessness
• Changes in coat such as dull color, matted/unkempt fur, or bald spots
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea

If your cat is exhibiting these signs, we can help with radioactive iodine (I-131) treatment! It is a non-invasive, one-time treatment that boasts a 95%+ cure rate. With over 500 successful treatments performed, you can trust your cat is in experienced hands.

Say goodbye to daily medications and hello to long-term relief.

We know emergencies are never planned — but if your pet needs urgent care that isn’t life-threatening, weekday daytime hours are often the best time to come in.

Evenings and weekends tend to be our busiest times, so if your pet’s condition allows, visiting us during the day Monday–Friday can make your experience smoother and quicker.

That said, we’re always open 24/7.

Thanks to the combo of rain and warmth, mushrooms are thriving in backyards, parks, and along trails. Wild mushroom ingestion can be a serious and sometimes life-threatening issue for pets.

While most mushrooms are harmless, a small number are dangerously toxic — and telling them apart isn’t easy without expert training. Some cause mild stomach upset, but others can lead to seizures or even organ failure.

Here’s how you can help keep your pup safe:

✅ Do a daily sweep of your yard and remove any mushrooms you spot.
✅ Stay alert during walks — especially in damp, shady areas.
✅ If you think your dog may have eaten a mushroom, don’t wait. Bring them in immediately. We recommend taking a photo of a similar mushroom nearby (especially showing the underside) so we can identify it.

Holly was brought in by her parents after they noticed she wasn't eating or drinking, lethargic, and that she was not acting like her normal puppy self. Upon reviewing a medical history and current symptoms, our doctor immediately ordered a Parvovirus test. Even though Holly was fully vaccinated, she was still positive for Parvo. Holly was immediately started on fluids to help rehydrate her while the doctor and her parents developed the best treatment plan for all.

Once Holly was admitted for care, her parents made the long 2-hour drive home and waited for updates. In addition to being treated for Parvo, Holly developed sepsis, which is a severe inflammatory response of the body; most likely in response to the Parvovirus. For the first 24 hours, it was clear Holly was not feeling her best. Since she did not want to eat, we needed to place a feeding tube. Slowly, Holly indicated she was feeling better as she was able to start eating on her own and keep her food and fluids down.

After spending 2 days in our ICU, Holly was well enough to go home and continue her healing journey with her family. Holly's family is happy to report that she is back to her old self and is doing great at home! We are so thankful for her owners who made the very long drive and trusted us with her care!
