Many Colorado families are surprised to learn that even full-term, healthy newborns can struggle to breathe at elevations above 6,000 feet. Some babies, even without any medical issues, go home on oxygen as their tiny lungs adjust to life outside the womb.
St. Francis Hospital's NICU Medical Director, Dr. Vicki Bailey, reminds families that it is a common, short-lived challenge. Most babies are off oxygen within weeks and will thrive like any other newborn.
