Insoo Kim Berg was a Korean-American psychotherapist, author, and lecturer. Her therapeutic method focused on a solutions-based approach, acknowledging that the client is the expert in their own life, and putting an emphasis on the future and the present. She worked with her clients to embrace successes and to look for ways to repeat and develop them, and with that, if something isn’t working, try something different.

Anna Freud, the youngest daughter of Sigmund Freud, continued in her father’s footsteps to make a significant impact on the mental health field, despite never having received a higher degree. She is most known for her work in expanding on her father’s work to identify defense mechanisms (such as projection, suppression, and repression), her contributions to ego psychology, and for being a founder of child psychoanalysis.

Anna Freud was originally an elementary school teacher, which piqued her interest in child psychology. Anna believed strongly in building a therapeutic alliance, as she knew children, unlike adults, aren’t voluntarily seeking out therapy. She saw the importance of not being a new playmate or replacement parent, but being a trusted adult. She knew the same standards of therapy weren't realistic for children, and allowed them to move around the room rather than sitting still on a couch. She also made drawing materials readily available and considered anything drawn to be as significant as anything spoken.

Meet Maria!

Maria works as a therapist in our Acute Treatment Unit (ATU), and has been with Diversus Health for almost a year.

Maria enjoys helping not only the clients on the unit, but being part of a team environment where all of their roles are important and necessary for any individual's treatment.

"I love the fact that I get to work with such a diverse set of peers from nursing to case management and providers with Diversus, it allows me to learn so much in one setting."

Outside of work, Maria is a huge metal head! Her favorite bands are Slipknot, Korn, and Disturbed. So if she has the time and there is a concert in the area she is most likely going to be there enjoying a show!

CHP - Firearm Safety & Suicide Prevention

Reducing access to lethal means can significantly reduce the risk of death by suicide. Our friends at The Suicide Prevention Collaboration created this video with Sheriff Bill Elder (El Paso County), Director of Public Safety Chris Heberer (City of Fountain), Lt. Col. Chris Jackson (United States Air Force), Police Chief Vincent Niski (City of Colorado Springs) and Fire Chief Randy Royal (City of Colorado Springs) to talk about the importance of Firearm Safety.

Boundaries are an important part of everyone’s personal development. They can be both physical, as well as emotional, and they are critical in helping establish your identity. They also help avoid burnout, develop autonomy, influence behavior for others, promote emotional health, and increase well-being. If you’re looking for help setting boundaries for yourself, be sure to try implementing the above framework for success in sticking with them.

This week we are drawing awareness to the issue of suicide.

Colorado ranks 7th in the nation for deaths by suicide, and that is even higher for El Paso county, which recorded the highest rates of death by suicide than other any county in the state.

This a hard topic to talk about, but it is so important that we do.

As we all hold various intersecting identities, having conversations about, and across, differences is a core leadership skill. Check out these steps to aid in effectively talking about differences!

In the Child and Family area of Diversus Health, we have the belief system that it’s important for children to see themselves reflected in their toys.

This inspired us to use some grant funding to ensure we have toys, books and art projects that reflect the diverse population in our world. When in therapy, helping children understand the diversity and complexity of their world starts with toys we give them to play with during a counseling session.

According to psychologist Dr. Amber A. Hewitt, a specialist in gendered racial socialization, being exposed to diversity via toys has great benefits for identity development.

“An inclusive toy box can promote positive racial/ethnic, gender, and cultural identity development for children. It’s important for children to see themselves reflected in their toys,” Hewitt says.

Children and Families at Diversus Health will have the pleasure to learn and grow in a diverse, inclusive, and equitable place.
