Generalization takes time with speech sound disorders… so be patient with the child, and yourself! It often takes months and months.

But there are some things we can do to make sure it happens sooner than later…

👉 choose an 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡… if you’re using a traditional articulation approach with a child who has a phonological impairment you will be spinning your wheels in therapy with slower progress.

👉 choose 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬… the approach you choose, will dictate what you address in therapy, and the targets we choose can have the biggest impact on how quickly a child improves.

👉 get a 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬… if you want to learn to do something you’ve got to do it A LOT.

👉 incorporate 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬… regardless of the nature of the deficit or the approach you choose (phono vs artic vs motor speech) speech is still a motor task, so tweaking little things about HOW you practice your speech targets can make all the difference.

If a child is able to produce a crisp accurate /t/ sound, then they are physically capable of producing a crisp S… it’s just up to us to find the right cues.

Phonological interventions that incorporate phonemic awareness… (the ability to recognize, identify, and manipulate individual sounds of a word)… will remediate speech errors faster!

If we just focus on the motor production of a new sound, we may actually be prolonging the intervention process.

Totally kidding! 😅I actually had a great experience working in the schools as a 😉… it’s where I fell in love with working with kids who had speech sound disorders.

But here’s to all the school-based SLPs on Christmas break… you deserve it! 🙌
