Every wonder what it looks like in your head when you're singing? Wonder no more. This video, from 2013, was recorded while artist Sivu was singing the song inside an MRI machine.

Even the astronauts need some music to help wake up!

Since the Gemini missions of the mid‑1960s, we’ve had a tradition of playing music to wake up astronauts and signal the start of their workday.

For the Artemis II mission, the crew personally selected their official wake‑up songs and we’ve added them to a playlist for everyone to enjoy: https://open.spotify.com/user/nasaspotify.

Stay tuned to find out which songs they’ll choose next.

Since April is Autism Acceptance Month, we thought we'd highlight some of the benefits of music therapy in working with autistic individuals. Music is non-threatening and highly structured, and helps to organize thoughts and emotions. It can help with the development of communication skills in ways that just words sometimes cannot. It's engaging, and good for working with all sorts of domains, including cognitive, speech, and motor skills. For these reasons, and others, music therapy is uniquely suited to help with autism.

Musical Mnemonics Training (MMT)™ is a Neurologic Music Therapy® technique in which music is used to assist in remembering information, such as routines, sequences, and tasks to be completed. The most famous example of music being used as a mnemonic device is the ABC song. Many people were taught the English alphabet through the use of this song, and many continue to use it to remember the order of letters far into their adulthood (myself included). Adding the information to be remembered to a familiar tune helps it to stick in the brain, and makes recall easier. It can be used for learning new information, or just to help remember. Music therapists can help create these musical mnemonics, or you can try it on your own. Try putting your to-do list into a song, such as the Happy Birthday song (First I need to get gas / Then I go to the store / Then I pick up my kids / Then I've finished my chores!). See how it helps!

Today, let's look at the Vibraslap, an instrument that makes a distinctive rattling sound when the ball is struck. Descended from an instrument known as the quijada (originally made from the jawbone of a donkey), the vibraslap is a high success instrument where the only thing you have to do to make a sound is hit the ball. You can work on grasp strength from holding the handle, eye-hand coordination as you focus on where to strike, and arm movements to get that perfect sound. It's multisensory, with the rattle giving tactile input as you receive the auditory input from the sound. Also, you can play along with a number of popular songs, such as "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osbourne, "Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith, "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix, "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" by Cake, and many more.
