For many patients who suffer a severe injury like a fall, it's the little things they miss the most. For Eleanor, that was her "adventures" to Trader Joe's and doing her hair and makeup each morning. After a devastating fall left her unable to walk, Eleanor entered inpatient rehabilitation at Encompass Health Toms River. Eleanor, who enjoys journaling, kept notes about her progress and the therapy and nursing care she received.
Now that she's back home she is sharing her story:

In August 2013, April Ballentine was shot five times at close range in a domestic violence incident. She survived, but sustained a T4 spinal cord injury leaving her paralyzed from the chest down. In March 2022, nearly nine years after coming to Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital for recovery, April took her first steps with an exoskeleton, an advanced technology that helps patients walk with robotic legs and a supportive body brace. She regularly practices walking with the exoskeleton during her outpatient therapy sessions at Cardinal Hill.
She continues to inspire her community as an advocate for domestic abuse victims, a mock patient for physical therapy students, and as the first patient to use an exoskeleton in therapy in the state of Kentucky. Read about her incredible journey:
