Those anti-social vibes.

The tell-tale sound may send a chill up your spine. It's a warning, but rattlesnakes don't make their famous rattling sound because they're spoiling for a fight. The snakes, found in a wide swath of Washington, make the noise to ward off potential threats (including humans) so they *don't* have to get into a confrontation and can conserve their venom.

When hiking or recreating in central and eastern Washington, be alert for their presence and be careful of where you place your feet and hands. It's also best to keep dogs on-leash and children in sight. If you encounter a rattlesnake, simply move away. Rattlesnakes generally want to avoid you as much as you want to avoid them.

They are most active in the summer, but you might also see them in the spring and fall as they move toward their hibernation sites.
