A little art therapy info.
History of Art Therapy
Art therapists, artists, therapists, and healers have been practicing community healing that integrates art mediums and practices throughout history.
âCreative and artistic expression has historically and simultaneously evolved as a part of human civilizations around the world (Dutton, 2010). Many scholars assert that art-making is an integral part of human functioning and would not have evolved or been a sustained part of human existence if it did not serve a significant adaptive purpose (Dutton, 2010; Davies, 2012; Kaimal, 2019). While the western worldâs recognition of the therapeutic benefits of the arts is more recent, Indigenous societies have acknowledged the healing power of visual art, dance, music, drama, and storytelling for millennia. Indigenous knowledge (Chilisa, 2012; Pascoe, 2015) highlights the importance of traditional wisdom and insight, including the close interaction of artistic practice with natural materials, creative agency, and contemplative and spiritual meaning-making (Franklin, 2017) while recognizing our interconnectedness with other living beings in nature (Pascoe, 2015; Nagarajan, 2018).â- Girija Kaimal and Asli Arslanbek, 2020
Visual expression has been used for healing throughout history, but art therapy did not emerge as a distinct profession until the 1940s. In the early 20th century, psychiatrists became interested in the artwork created by their patients with mental illness. At around the same time, educators were discovering that children's art expressions reflected developmental, emotional, and cognitive growth. By mid-century, hospitals, clinics, and rehabilitation centers increasingly began to include art therapy programs along with traditional "talk therapies," underscoring the recognition that the creative process of art-making enhanced recovery, health, and wellness. As a result, the profession of art therapy grew into an effective and important method of communication, assessment, and treatment with children and adults in a variety of settings.
Some days I really love being an Art Therapist. Today was one of those days!â¤â¤â¤

I just want to share some recent information regarding COVID-19 and pregnancy, specifically about the increase rates of stillbirth in birthing parents who experienced the Covid virus.
https://www.propublica.org/article/covid-maternity-stillbirth-vaccines-pregnancy
Doctors discovered that some stillbirths resulted from COVID-19 directly infiltrating the placenta, a condition they named SARS-CoV-2 placentitis. Cases were found even in people whose COVID-19 symptoms were mild or nonexistent.
Unvaccinated women who contracted COVID-19 during pregnancy were at a higher risk of stillbirths.
None of the stillbirths they studied involved a pregnant person who had been fully vaccinated.
The risk of a stillbirth nearly doubled for those who had COVID-19 during pregnancy compared with those who didnât. And during the spread of the delta variant, that risk was four times higher.
âGod, No, Not Another Case.â COVID-Related Stillbirths Didnât Have to Happen. A lack of testing data and government guidance led many to avoid the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy, unwittingly increasing their chances of a stillbirth.
Turn up the sound. Enjoy!
At Henryâs Heart Art Therapy I try to stay out of the political arena as much as possible. With regard to the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe vs. Wade, I cannot stay silent. While abortion is currently protected in the State of Colorado, there will always be challenges to this law. The consequences of the Supreme Court ruling will have a harmful impact on the clients I serve both through Henryâs Heart Art Therapy and those I serve as a support group leader and board member of RTZ:HOPE.
Birthing people dealing with fertility challenges, those whose medical conditions make it dangerous for them to become pregnant, those who are faced with having been r***d and are now pregnant, those whose unborn baby is facing a life ending disorder in utero, those who need to have a D&C, those who will face accusations on top of having a miscarriage or still birth, those facing an ectopic pregnancy, those who are the victims of in**st, just to name a few will have no choice over their health and well-being. I am heartbroken for the wave of suffering that this ruling is already creating in many places.
Henryâs Heart Art Therapy remains a safe, non-judgmental space for anyone who needs a place to process any aspect of their reproductive journey.
Just finished up a section of Unexpecting: Infant Loss group. I am so incredibly honored to have held space for these amazing parents.⤠The healing and the connections made ...brings tears to my eyes.

Some parents are facing the unthinkable reality of not being able to feed their children through no fault of their own, so Colorado is partnering on an option to address the formula supply issue. It is critical that we use every option out there to make sure our infants do not go hungry.

While we realize the US public is gaining awareness of the maternity crises, the most recent CDC data indicate that preventable maternal deaths and severe outcomes related to pregnancy are INCREASINGâźď¸
In 2020, 861 women were identified as having died of maternal causes in the United States, compared with 754 in 2019. The maternal mortality rate for 2020 was 23.8 deaths per 100,000 live births compared with a rate of 20.1 in 2019.
AND severe maternal morbidity (complications or near miss events) is now estimated to be 100 times more prevalent than maternal mortality.
đ It is estimated 60% of these complications ARE PREVENTABLE.
Until every American understands the brevity of this crises, just as the Opioid epidemic took lead in national attention over 10 years ago, the WHY must be addressed at every level - and the public must understand how to push policymakers, payers, and providers to ACT.
Change does not require research or reflection - we know the answers.
We need public will to demand it no longer be ignored.
CONSIDER joining us in DC this year!
If you canât be there in person, we are live streaming Sunday June 5th and the Congressional Briefing June 6th. We will be asking for contributions to support these events and provide a Call to Action.

The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not get over the loss of a loved one. You will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again, but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same. Nor would you want to. đ˘đ

Today I am spending some time dusting Henry's angels. Not sure why today, maybe because it's Holy week, maybe because a classmate of mine lost her mom in a tragic way...not sure. I do know that it is a ritual for me. Many of the angels are music boxes,so have to be cleaned carefully. It allows for a lot of reflection on who gifted them, where my faith was then and where it is now...lots of thoughts, lots of emotion. Lots of gratitude.
There is legislation being debated right now in the US congress regarding research and awareness around stillbirth. It is called the S.H.I.N.E. for Autumn Act. I has bi-partisan support and is co-sponsored by Senator Booker(D) and Senator Rubio (R). This is an important step in preventing infant loss. In Colorado alone, 5.54 babies per 1000 deliveries are still born. This statistic is from 2019, pre pandemic. Numbers are expected to be shown to be higher for 2020 and 2021. We as a nation can do better. Learn more at this link
