Crying is often seen as a sign of weakness, yet science reveals it is one of the body’s most powerful forms of healing. A new study shows that emotional tears lower cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone, while triggering the release of endorphins and oxytocin, chemicals that calm pain, elevate mood, and restore emotional balance.

Researchers discovered that emotional tears, unlike reflex tears from irritation, contain higher concentrations of stress-related toxins that the body physically expels through crying. This process acts as an emotional detox, helping the nervous system reset after intense sadness, anger, or grief.

When tears are held back, cortisol levels stay high, keeping the body in a prolonged stress state. Over time, this suppression can weaken the immune system, disturb sleep, and increase risks of anxiety, headaches, and digestive problems. Letting tears flow allows the parasympathetic nervous system to activate, slowing the heart rate, relaxing muscles, and signaling safety to the brain.

The chemistry of crying goes far beyond emotion. Endorphins dull pain, oxytocin restores connection, and lowered cortisol helps the body return to balance. It is a natural, built-in therapy designed by biology itself.

Crying does not mean breaking down; it means the body is healing. Each tear is proof of resilience, releasing what the heart can no longer carry so the mind and body can finally breathe again.

You still count.
Even if your arms are empty.
Even if your motherhood looks different.
Even if the world forgets to mention your baby’s name.

You’re still a mother, the kind who carries love in silence, who celebrates in whispers, and who grieves between moments of strength.

Just because they don’t see your baby doesn’t mean your love disappeared.
You mother through memory, through tears, through the ache of what should’ve been.

You’re allowed to miss them.
You’re allowed to say their name.
You’re allowed to still feel like a mom,
because you are one.

If there are ways to give of your time, talents or money to any of these causes, I hope you do so. :)

Serving Moms on the journey to and through motherhood.

Henry's Heart Art Therapy is a creative, supportive environment that provides for expression of emotions around pregnancy, motherhood, and infant loss. All group and individual sessions are facilitated by me, Susan Jacobsen. I am a mother of loss and a registered and board certified art therapist with 25 years experience. I am a licensed mental health provider in the states of Colorado and Nebraska and hold a certificate in Trauma Informed Practice as well as a certificate as a SoulCollage(R) facilitator. Henry’s Heart Art Therapy is named after my first baby Henry who was stillborn at 37 weeks due to HELLP Syndrome. It is my desire to provide a safe place for mom’s in all stages of life to express themselves around the amazing, and sometimes heartbreaking journey of motherhood.
