What Is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the natural transition leading up to menopause — and it can start earlier than many women expect, often in their late 30s to 40s.

During this time, hormone levels begin to fluctuate, which can lead to changes like irregular periods, hot flashes or night sweats and mood changes or anxiety. Every woman’s experience is different, and symptoms can come and go unpredictably.

If you’ve noticed changes in your cycle or how you’re feeling, you don’t have to guess what’s normal — or manage it alone.

Waking up suddenly feeling overheated or drenched in sweat? Nighttime hot flashes are a common symptom during perimenopause and menopause — and they can seriously disrupt sleep and daily energy.

Hormonal changes can make your body’s temperature regulation more sensitive, triggering sudden warmth, sweating, and chills. Factors like warm rooms, stress, caffeine, and alcohol can also make symptoms worse.

The good news? There are ways to manage them. Lifestyle adjustments, sleep strategies, and medical treatment options may help reduce nighttime hot flashes and improve your rest.

If night sweats are affecting your sleep or quality of life, it may be time to talk with a provider.
