Five years have passed since I first posted this. I was 5 days out from having my oldest child. Women are still inundated with messages to “lose baby weight fast.” Or to wrap their stomachs to regain a svelte appearance.

Y’all, this is crazy. You don’t need to disguise your thighs. Your amazing thighs help to support you. Those stretch marks grew to allow life to grow. Your body did incredible things to help bring baby into the world. Thank your body. You are capable. You are strong. There is hope.

Hey Friends, I’m going there!

Many of my clients carry a lot of shame about their bodies secondary to religious beliefs that disempower. They are told that they deserve pain. So many feel like getting to know their bodies is taboo. Countless clients feel like they shouldn’t enjoy s*x. Many feel it is impure to feel and look at their own anatomy.

Friends: you are worth knowing. It’s okay to ask questions when something feels off. It doesn’t make you impure.

Should you kegel when you cough if you leak with a cough? When should you squeeze?

It depends 🤷🏼‍♀️

You are capable. You are strong. There is hope.

Can your scar impact the engagement of your core? Short answer: yes! This video shows me engaging my core (a little exaggerated with belly breathing so you can see the change in appearance of my scar). This is an appendectomy scar from when I was 4 years old. As I grew so did my scar. For the longest time the right side of my core muscles simply did not want to engage with much balance. Visually you can still see some of the imbalance.⠀

So if you have scarring (like a c-section scar or even scar tissue in your pelvic floor) does that mean your muscle engagement is permanently screwed? No! Our bodies are incredible and adaptive. They can do hard things. With my body in particular it meant being very intentional with increasing my mind-body connection with the right side. Is my imbalance gone? Nah, my left side is still stronger. But can my right side handle harder core work? Yes! ⠀
Is there more I could to to change the appearance and muscle balance? Probably. But I’m freaking proud of this scar. It saved my life. And I function pretty dang well with it as it is. ⠀

It’s okay to be frustrated with your scars. It’s okay to care or not care about your scar’s appearance and function. Scars are physical reminders of moments that have made us who we are. And spending a little time getting to know our scars may be hard; but it is worth it. ⠀

Do you have a scar that has shaped who you are?⠀

How do you feel about your scar? There is no wrong answer. ⠀

You are capable. You are strong. There is hope. ⠀

Midwives are magic! My favorite part of midwifery care is how they treat the whole person. I never feel rushed, my midwives practice true informed consent for medical interventions, my midwives advocate for me and they listen!

Have you used midwifery care? What have you loved about your midwives? Let me know!
Posted • Help us celebrate our incredible Nurse-Midwives this week. Tell the midwives your favorite part of midwifery care!

Work movement in throughout your day!!

One way to work in movement? Hand your kids a bag of ball pit balls. They will end up all over the floor. Help pick them up; squatting to get each one. You will be sore 😅
