Hip flexors are often stretched, but neglected when it comes to strengthening. Here are some pointers on why and how to address this.

"My experience with Emily over the past several months has been great! I injured my knee over a year ago while cycling. I've gone from not being able to walk without pain to cycling and hiking again, and my legs are stronger than before. All the exercises Emily showed me helped a ton, and because of her great work, I don't have to go back anytime soon!" - E.S.

In honor of Physical Therapy month, a note on why movement matters, and why we do what we do:

"The human body is made to move. It craves it. It’s built to function around movement, providing our bodies with the innate capacity to strengthen, to heal, to age gracefully, and to thrive at its peak.
Needless to say, movement is vital to the optimal functions of our bodies. But it’s much more than that.

To move is to experience life. Our ability to work, to play with our kids, to compete at our best, to explore the world around us…movement is at the center of it all. Regardless of age or physical limitation, movement makes it possible for all of us to reach our greatest potential as humans.

In this respect, the task of optimizing and restoring movement—the mission of physical therapists across the country—is about more than personal health. It’s about transforming lives, empowering communities and, yes, changing the world."

Imaging such as xrays, MRIs, and CT scans are an incredible resource to see what is going on in the body.

BUT... sometimes the findings of those images can be scary and intimidating, often leading the person to feel more pain and worry just because they have been told something is wrong, even though nothing changed physiologically pre and post imaging.

Studies have found that many of us going about our days pain-free can have some ugly images (check out the picture below of SYMPTOM-FREE people and how much looked "wrong"). What is found through imaging is a helpful tool, but is NOT always the source of pain, and shouldn't be the ultimate decision maker. PT can help you determine the source and severity of your symptoms so you can best proceed with an informed view.
