Meet the artist, Marty Slayden, in her own words:
Hi! I'm Marty. For 40 years I was a Spanish and French teacher, and all my creativity flowed into my teaching. Then I retired, and now I am an artist!
I have enjoyed making things with my hands since I was a child, but I don't have any formal art education. Clay is my favorite medium, and I especially love making figures - the crazier the better! People say that "whimsy" must be my middle name.
Since 2021, I have had my own home studio, and it is such a wonderful place to just let myself explore. The only problem is that the stuff starts to pile up. Then I discovered a way to get rid of my artwork and do something good for my community at the same time: now all the money from selling my work goes to support Westside Cares - a fabulous nonprofit that supports people struggling with poverty and homelessness. In the last five years, sales of my work have raised over $10,000 in donations. I am grateful to Miriam's Place for providing an outlet for showing and selling my work.
