TMS is an innovative new(ish!) treatment option within psychiatry, and one we've seen SO many patients benefit from. But, what is it? Keep reading to learn a bit more about TMS and who might benefit from this cutting-edge treatment modality.

❓What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
TMS is a non-invasive neurostimulation technique that uses pulsed magnetic fields to treat specific regions of the brain involved in mental health conditions. TMS has been FDA approved since 2008 and is now a highly sought-after treatment approach due to its safety profile and potential for rapid symptom relief.

🧠 Fast Facts about TMS:
- While it has the most research in treatment of depression, it can also be helpful for anxiety, OCD and PTSD
- TMS is non-systemic, meaning it produces clinical benefit without the systemic side effects associated with oral psychiatric medications.
- During the initial course, treatments are typically multiple days per week and last between 3 and 20mins.
- There are no post-treatment activity restrictions.
- Many insurance companies will cover all or part of TMS treatments, depending on the symptoms being treated and previous treatment trials.
- What is a TMS treatment like? During TMS treatment sessions, a magnetic coil is placed near your scalp; this coil delivers magnetic pulses to your brain, stimulating neurons in the area of the brain associated with the psychiatric symptoms you are experiencing.

Brain-Food Spotlight Starring….Berries! Here are a few ways in which berries can help support our mental health:

Berries are an excellent source of powerful phytonutrients that can actually cross the blood brain barrier and affect genes that control things like inflammation, memory, and promotion of new and healthy neuronal connections.

Berries, as well as other deep-red or purple fruits & veggies, get their coloring from a phytonutrient called anthocyanin, which protects our neurons in a region of the brain important for memory.

Berry seeds also contain ellagitannins, which are potent antioxidants and fight against inflammation.

Blueberries, (especially wild ones!) may increase BDNF, a molecule that supports the health and growth of neurons, like Miracle Grow for the brain!

Cranberries contain a unique compound called proanthocyanidin which prevents bacteria from adhering to the bladder, hence the use of cranberry in promoting bladder health and staving off UTI's.

As you can see, these tiny fruits pack a big punch in the way of brain-boosting benefits. Want to learn more about how food affects our brain? Let's talk about anxiety! Although it may sound counterintuitive, in general, anxiety is healthy. Anxiety, or stress, is what pushes us to study for that exam, prepare for the presentation, or alerts us to an unsafe situation. When does “healthy anxiety” become pathologic? Typically, when that anxiety is excessive, persistent and disproportionate to the actual threat or situation. Another clue may be that your anxiety about a specific situation or event keeps you from doing what you need or want to do, and impacts your ability to lead the type of life you want to lead.

Anxiety disorders are unfortunately quite common. In fact, they are the most common psychiatric condition in the United States affecting nearly 40 million adults, that’s more than 19% of the population! Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, with a variety of different treatment paths, yet only 36.9% of those suffering with anxiety are receiving treatment.

🔍 Types of Anxiety Disorders:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Persistent worry about everyday events.
Panic Disorder: Sudden panic attacks with intense physical symptoms.
Social Anxiety Disorder: Fear of social situations and judgment.
Specific Phobias: Irrational fear of specific objects or situations.
Other Anxiety Disorders: Including Separation Anxiety, Selective Mutism, and Agoraphobia.

💡 Effective Treatments:
Psychotherapy: Tailored to your specific anxiety type.
Medication: Biochemical relief for anxiety symptoms.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS): For specific cases.
Lifestyle & Nutrition: Small changes can make a big difference.
Nutraceuticals & Herbal Supplements: Natural support (with professional guidance).

For the final post in our therapy series, we wanted to talk about a few key factors that can set individuals up for success when it comes to therapy, no matter what you're working on:

1. Trust: therapy is built upon trust between the patient and the therapist. This can take time, so don't worry if you don't feel it right away.

2. Goals: it's important to set and regularly re-evaluate your goals in therapy. Like any treatment modality, the goal is progress; to make progress, you need a clear direction.

3. Honesty: honestly is crucial in the therapeutic relationship. Your therapist can only help you if they truly understand you, and hiding parts of your past or current self will only serve to hinder your progress. This also goes for honesty within the therapeutic relationship – if you feel that your therapist isn't the right fit for you, if you don't feel like you're making progress in the right areas, or if something they've done or said has upset you, it's important to let them know.

4. Openness: One of the coolest parts about therapy is working with your therapist to challenge your perspectives, including the beliefs you have about yourself and the world around you. Part of the therapist's job is to challenge your maladaptive thought patterns or negative belief systems that may be holding you back, and being open to hearing and exploring a new perspective is an important contributor to growth.

5. Commitment: Therapy is hard, it's uncomfortable and it's frequently messy. But, it's pushing through those parts that ensures growth. Without a high level of commitment, it's challenging to make meaningful progress.

Happy National Psychotherapy Day! In celebration of one of our favorite treatment modalities we wanted to post about some of the long-term benefits of therapy --

The list of long term benefits of therapy are many, but in general, therapy can help individuals better understand the root cause of their suffering. It also helps develop an understanding of why you may act or react to situations in a certain way. This deeper understanding of our thought processes and behaviors fosters self-compassion and empathy, forging the path to self-acceptance and self-love. Importantly, with this better understanding of yourself, therapy can help you more efficiently and effectively create positive change in your life, both now and in the future.

In celebration of National Psychotherapy Day on September 25th, we wanted to share a bit about therapy and why we love it so much! It truly is one of the most effective treatment options available for a wide variety of symptoms, and is something we recommend to most of our patients. We hope these posts will inspire you try therapy if you haven't yet! 🧠💙

What is therapy? Therapy or psychotherapy is a professional process where individuals work with a trained mental health expert to address and manage emotional, psychological, or behavioral issues. It offers a structured setting where people can openly discuss their thoughts and feelings in a confidential and non-judgmental environment. There are many different types of therapy. Depending on the symptoms an individual is struggling with, a therapist may choose one type of therapy over another. Though the modality may differ, in general, the goal of psychotherapy is to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and use that knowledge to create intentional and meaningful change with the goal of living a richer and more fulfilling life.

At Meah Modern Psychiatry, our Psychotherapists are trained in a wide variety of therapeutic modalities and focus on creating an individualized therapy treatment plan which may include one or even multiple types of therapy.
