National Women's History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed a public law which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed another law which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating March as “Women’s History Month.” This celebrates the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

Black History Month has been celebrated every February since 1976. President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” That year, fifty years after the first celebration, the association held the first Black History Month. By this time, the entire nation had come to recognize the importance of Black history in the drama of the American story. Since then each American president has issued Black History Month proclamations.

During American Heart Month, the AHA and other organizations reinforce the importance of heart health, the need for more research and efforts to ensure that millions of people live longer and healthier.
In most cases, heart disease is preventable when people adopt a healthy lifestyle, which includes not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood sugar and cholesterol, treating high blood pressure, getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week and getting regular checkups.

Eyesight is often taken for granted and living without it can be a challenge. Over three million Americans and over 60 million people worldwide have glaucoma, which is often referred to as "the sneak thief of sight," because there are often no symptoms of its presence. As much as 40% of vision can be lost without a person noticing, which experts estimate is the case in half of those who suffer from glaucoma.
The largest risk factors for glaucoma include:
1. High eye pressure
2. Family history of glaucoma
3. Age 40 and older for African Americans
4. Age 60 and older for the general population, especially Latino Americans
5. Thin cornea
6. Suspicious optic nerve appearance with increased cupping (size of cup, the space at the center of the optic nerve, is larger than normal)

This January is Bath Safety Month, reminding you to take some extra precautions and save yourselves from home injuries. Bathing is such a routine activity that we often neglect to take proper precautions while we’re in what is absolutely one of the most dangerous places in our homes. But there are a lot of things we can do to minimize the risk of injury in the bath. Here are some of the most common ways to stay safe in our soapy havens.
1. Grab Bars
2. Shower Chair
3. Hand-held Shower-head
