What if on today, December 1st, we began our season of rest and indulgence with intentionality?

We don’t have to wait until January 1st to start the thing. December can be a month of gentle resets and small choices that support our health and peace of mind. Whether it’s beginning a morning meditation practice, committing to consistent movement, scheduling the medical visit you’ve been putting off, or finally getting your finances organized, now is a perfect time to care for yourself.

This season tends to pull us toward overcommitment and stress, but it can also be a season of slowing down, grounding, and reconnecting with what matters. One small step today can set the tone for your new year long before it begins.

If you’ve been meaning to establish care, catch up on preventive health, or take the next step in your wellness journey, we’re here to help at Pikes Peak Family Medicine.

As we move into the holiday season, many of us feel the pressure to do more, give more, host more, and be everywhere at once. But our bodies and minds were never designed to run without pause.

At Pikes Peak Family Medicine, we’re inviting our community to enter a season of rest, to rediscover the art of slowing down, breathing deeply, and honoring the rhythms that keep us healthy. Rest is not a luxury. It is a vital part of our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

This month, we encourage you to build in small pockets of restoration:
🌲 Step outside for a few minutes of fresh air
🌲 Set aside your phone for an evening
🌲 Say no when your plate is full
🌲 Go to bed a little earlier
🌲 Sit with a warm drink and simply be

Your health is shaped not only by what you do, but also by what you allow yourself not to do.

Wishing you peace, restoration, and moments of genuine quiet this holiday season.

Your team at PPFM is here to support you every step of the way.

It feels like every year we hold our breath waiting for the new healthcare premiums to drop, and somehow they still manage to surprise us.

Families across the country are seeing increases in monthly premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs. For many, it is becoming harder to afford the coverage they rely on to stay healthy. These rising costs do not just affect budgets. They affect decisions about when to seek care, whether to fill prescriptions, and how to plan for the year ahead.

At Pikes Peak Family Medicine, we understand how overwhelming this can feel. We focus on delivering care that actually saves patients time, money, and stress. Our model offers house calls, convenient telemedicine, quick communication through the patient portal, and a personalized approach that helps prevent small issues from turning into bigger ones. When patients have a strong relationship with their primary care team, they often avoid unnecessary urgent care visits, reduce hospital expenses, and get better long-term outcomes.

If healthcare costs are stretching your family, you are not alone. If you ever need help understanding your benefits or preparing for open enrollment, we are always happy to walk you through your options.

Investing in a primary care relationship that truly knows you is one of the most impactful choices you can make for your health and your wallet.

How are rising premiums affecting your family this year?

In Colorado Springs, we will not stand by while our neighbors go hungry, not our children, not our seniors, and not our residents living with disabilities. As SNAP benefits expire on November 1, I am calling on our entire community — residents, nonprofits, faith leaders, and businesses — to rise to this moment with compassion and action.

If you are in need, help is available. Local organizations across our city are ready to serve you. And if you are able to give, I urge you to support our food banks and community partners with monetary or food donations.

While I may not have authority over federal programs like SNAP, I do have a responsibility to stand with our residents in times of hardship. Colorado Springs has always shown its heart in moments like these, and I know we will step up again.

At Pikes Peak Family Medicine, we believe that community health extends far beyond the exam room. It includes making sure our neighbors have access to nutritious food—something that’s increasingly uncertain during the current federal government shutdown.

Many local food pantries and cooperatives depend on USDA food programs, which purchase food directly from American farmers at a lower cost than what any of us can buy at the store. These federal funds help organizations like Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado purchase additional food through Feeding America, stretching every dollar to feed more families.

With no federal distribution expected for November, already dwindling food supplies will be further strained. This is where our community can make an enormous difference.

If you’re able, please consider making a financial donation to your local food pantry. Even a small contribution can go farther than you think—and together, we can help ensure no family in Colorado Springs goes without.

🚨 Medicare & the Government Shutdown: What Colorado Seniors Need to Know

With the current federal government shutdown, many in our community are asking how this impacts Medicare. Here’s a breakdown for Colorado Springs families and patients:

✅ What’s Still Covered
• Your Medicare benefits continue — doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, and provider claims will still be processed.
• Medicare’s core funding isn’t stopped by the shutdown.

⚠️ What Could Be Delayed
• Telehealth visits: Pandemic-era expansions that let Medicare cover many virtual services are on hold — meaning some seniors may lose easy access to care at home.
• Enrollment changes & appeals: If you’re switching plans, enrolling for the first time, or filing an appeal, expect slower response times.
• Replacement cards & verifications: Administrative requests (new cards, benefit checks, etc.) may face delays with staff furloughs.

📍 What You Can Do
• Don’t delay Medicare changes — open enrollment (starting Oct. 15) is expected to continue, but plan early.
• Check with your providers about telehealth coverage and backup options.
• Reach out to your representatives to voice concerns about protecting senior healthcare access during shutdowns.

At Pikes Peak Family Medicine, we’ll continue to care for our patients through house calls and telehealth where available. We’re here to help you navigate changes and make sure you don’t miss the care you need.

👉 If you have questions about your Medicare coverage or appointments during this time, give us a call or message us directly.
