There are SO many benefits of holding your baby during their nap, but my favorite reason as a therapist is nervous system regulation. Who doesn’t want a calm baby?!
And if that didn’t convince you, here are the other benefits of contact napping 💙
• Promotes bonding & attachment (for ALL caregivers, including adoptive parents)
• Helps baby feel safe, secure, and regulated
• Supports nervous system regulation (co-regulation)
• Can improve sleep quality + longer naps
• Helps stabilize heart rate, breathing, and temperature
• Encourages more organized sleep-wake cycles
• Reduces stress hormones (for both baby & caregiver)
• Supports emotional development & trust building
• Increases oxytocin (“bonding hormone”) in both baby & caregiver
• Can support breastfeeding success (if applicable)
• Helps babies transition between sleep cycles more easily
• Provides ideal sensory input (touch, warmth, smell, movement)
• May reduce crying/fussiness
• Supports brain development through responsive caregiving
• Helps caregivers learn baby’s cues + rhythms
• Can ease postpartum anxiety/depression symptoms through closeness
• Encourages rest for caregiver (even if not sleeping)
• Especially beneficial for premature or medically fragile infants
• Supports attachment regardless of how baby joined your family 🤍
