Running as a Masters Athlete…

Cardiovascular changes
-Decrease in max HR
-Drop in Vo2m
-Less time for training AND recovery
-Running economy is unaffected though 🙌

Musculoskeletal changes
-Loss of strength and power
-Decreased tendon stiffness
-Reduced propulsive force

Slowing the changes
-High intensity intervals
-Heavy slow resistance training (like in our Strength 4 Runners classes 😉)
-Plyometrics (hops, skips, jumps, etc)

Current thoughts 👇

1️⃣ Glutes are important, but not as much as other regions when it comes to strength and power for distance running. There are cases such as in mountainous trail running this can change if you isolate a steep enough climb.

2️⃣ It’s less about the strength and power and more about the rhythm, coordination, and timing. Truth time, no muscle will probably ever be strong enough in an isolated fashion to run. It all works together in concert through that rhythm, coordination, and timing.

Super interesting topic! Hit up the comments if you want to chat about it or ask questions.

Tendon pain: need to knows…

💪Tendon tissue is insanely strong!

🩻Pain doesn’t necessarily mean there is damage. Many damaged tendons are painless. Conversely, healthy tendons can be painful. May have just over cooked it a little.

🔑Progressive resisted exercise and good metabolic health are two big keys to getting back to 100%

Back in December…I did a thing.

I ran my first marathon. Yes, my first.

It was quite the journey getting there that really starts 2yrs prior when I broke my ankle and partially tore my peroneal longus tendon.

This post contains some of the big takeaways from the last 2 years, woth a focus on the marathon. If you want the full story, you can check out our blog through our bio link.

Painful tendon? We see a lot of that here.

The plyometric nature of running means we use our tendons a lot! Sometimes to a greater extent than we can recover from well.

If that’s the case for you, these common characteristics may resonate with you and help you find a path forward better knowing what you might be dealing with. Of course a full and thorough eval is always the best bet to identify the best path forward.

Dear runners and endurance athletes,

Are you stuck in this cycle?

Many people are. We’re helping people everyday break this cycle of relying on passive modalities that take the locus of control away from you and onto someone else. You have all that you need inside you to manage things independently if you are open and ready to explore it. Won’t be easy, but it will be lasting.

There is nothing wrong with these modalities as a small part of a bigger plan. However, many people (clinicians and athletes) don’t use them in this manner. It’s a mean to address symptoms in the short term and get back to training asap without ever addressing anything meaningful.

If we instead take a step back, address training behavior, acknowledge and account for life stressors, and manipulate supplementary exercises for tissue health…everything changes! Rarely, if ever, will you need these passive modalities.
