If part of you wants to register…
and part of you is scared you won’t be “good enough” — read this.

You’re not expected to arrive polished or perfected.
You’re invited to arrive curious, open, and human.

This training is about embodiment, not pressure.
Support, not comparison.
Real skills you can actually use.

If you’ve been waiting for permission — this is it.

Hi there, fellow seekers of strength and self-improvement! Have you ever paused mid-scroll and stumbled upon a quote that just *hits*? You know, the kind that makes you nod vigorously and think, "Whoa, that's deep." Well, today, we're diving headfirst into one such gem: This one was said by Grand Master Pedro Valente and is used by the Valente Brothers today. "If selfish people knew what they get from being selfless, they'd be selfless for selfish reasons." Attributed to the wisdom of anonymous thinkers (or perhaps a clever philosopher in disguise), this paradox packs a punch. It flips the script on human nature, suggesting that true gain often comes from giving—even if your motives start out a tad self-centered.

But what does this have to do with self-defense, martial arts, and the vibrant world of jiu jitsu? Stick with me as we unpack this quote through the lens of Jujutsu training at Self Defense Academy Colorado Springs. We'll explore how embracing selflessness on the mat can supercharge your personal growth, build unbreakable resilience, and yes, even satisfy those "selfish" desires for empowerment and confidence. By the end, you might just find yourself itching to roll up your sleeves (or Kimono) and join us. Let's break it down!

The Paradox of Selfishness in a Selfish World

On the fence about this Tibetan Singing Bowls workshop?

That usually doesn’t mean no.
It means this matters.

You don’t need to feel “ready.”
You don’t need to be confident yet.
You don’t need to have it all mapped out.

This is a space to learn, practice, and grow into the work — not perform it.

If your body keeps leaning in, even while your mind hesitates…
that’s worth listening to.

In the annals of human history, from the sun-baked sands of ancient Egypt to the misty highlands of feudal Japan, one archetype stands eternal: the warrior.

Societies across time and space have elevated their fighting class to near-mythic status, weaving tales of valor that inspire generations. But why? What psychological undercurrents drive this universal reverence? And in our modern era, where physical confrontations are rare but mental and emotional battles rage daily, how does mastering the art of combat – like through jiu jitsu (Jujutsu) – equip us not just for the ring, but for life itself?

At Self Defense Academy Colorado Springs, we see this transformation every day in our jujutsu classes and self defense training programs.

Join us as we dive deep into the psychology of the fighter, explore the counterintuitive peace that comes from learning to fight, and discover why Jujutsu could be your ultimate tool for personal empowerment.

"Every person must decide whether they will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”

— Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This profound quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. captures the essence of benevolence—a deliberate choice to prioritize kindness, empathy, and mutual benefit over self-centered actions. At Self Defense Academy Colorado Springs, we draw directly from this wisdom through the 753 Code, a guiding philosophy in our JuJutsu practice that lists benevolence as one of its seven core virtues of a warrior. The code, developed by the Valente Brothers, integrates Dr. King’s words as the defining quote for benevolence, reminding practitioners that true strength lies in uplifting others.

Hello, fellow seekers of growth and warriors of the mat! As we step into 2026, I'm excited to share my personal "Word of the Year" tradition. If you've followed my journey, you know that last year, 2025, was all about Shokunin – the Japanese concept of craftsmanship, dedication, and the relentless pursuit of mastery in one's art. It shaped how I approached everything from daily routines to my training sessions. But this year, I'm evolving that foundation with a new guiding principle: Leverage.

Why leverage? In a world that's constantly accelerating, I've realized that true power isn't just about grinding harder; it's about working smarter. Leverage is about amplifying your efforts, turning small actions into massive impacts, and using what's already at your disposal to achieve more. As someone deeply immersed in Jiu-Jitsu (or Jujutsu, as it's traditionally known), this word resonates on multiple levels – from the physical mechanics on the mat to the mental strategies off it. And nowhere does this play out more vividly than at the Self Defense Academy Colorado Springs, where I've been honing my skills.

In this blog post, we'll dive into the etymology and historical evolution of "leverage," explore its profound ties to JuJutsu, and see how it integrates with the empowering programs at Self Defense Academy Colorado Springs. Whether you're a martial arts enthusiast, a self-defense advocate, or just someone looking for personal development inspiration, stick around – this word could transform your year too. Let's leverage our time together and get started!
