• Otherwise known as “walking” or
“atypical” pneumonia
• We are seeing a surge in cases both within the US and globally
• Not “new” — it is a well-known cause of community acquired pneumonia in kids, especially in kids aged 10-17 years
• historically, only 2% of cases are in children under 2y — but with the numbers and exposures right now, this number is likely higher
• It is treatable with antibiotics and most healthy kids handle it well. ****How is it diagnosed?
Chest X-ray and PCR testing from nasal or throat swabs can be an option, but usually we make the diagnosis based on history and physical exam.
***Parents, what to know:
What makes diagnosis tough is that symptoms overlap closely with many other viral respiratory germs.
If your child has been coughing for longer that 7-10 days, is not improving, or has other symptoms that are concerning, go get them checked out even if they’ve already been seen at the ER
