AUSOM at Work: A Success Story 🌟
Through the Autism Society of Maryland’s Autism Hiring Program, individuals are developing skills, gaining confidence, and securing meaningful employment.
Meet Andrew:

Hello, my name is Andrew. I am a proud member of the Autism Hiring Program (AHP) Spring 2025 Cohort. With AHP’s guidance and support, I secured a role as Support Staff at P.F. Chang’s while I pursue a long-term career in the film industry after completing my degree in Audio Technology. Through my journey in the program, I have realized that to advance in my career, I need to continue my education. With the weekly lesson during our peer meetings and the coaching from my Employment Consultant, I acquired the tools to improve my resume, reflecting both my current skills and the skills I need to secure employment in film. I learned how to navigate the hiring process, build confidence, and take the first steps in my career journey. I apply the knowledge I've gained to excel every day at work through dedication and enthusiasm. I am excited to thrive in an inclusive program that values my contributions, recognizes my efforts, and provides opportunities to build meaningful relationships.

Meet Jessica:

My name is Jessica and I participated in the Autism Hiring Program (AHP) Spring 2025 Cohort.

With support from AHP, I explored job options focusing on roles in the nonprofit and creative sector, with the goals of becoming a Librarian, Novelist, and Mental Health Advocate. While these roles remain my ultimate career goals, I have some chronic health challenges that delay my progress, and it will likely take me several years to reach them.

I transferred my job log to Trello to streamline my job search and participated in the peer meeting to stay actively engaged with the program. I explored remote roles that would allow me to grow professionally while contributing meaningfully to others. During this process, I also learned about the E-CPR certification, which could enhance my ability to serve my community. I will be enrolling in this class soon.

While working with Melissa and being a part of AHP, I received more than just job training and employment readiness assistance. I became part of a community of people that shared much of my lived experience, and received the kind of unconditional acceptance and support I have been searching for my entire life. The members of my cohort were privy to my illness, and never once did they make me feel less than or guilty for not being able to participate in the ways that I would have liked. They made accommodations for all my needs, cheered me on through my toughest days, and even visited me in the hospital. By the end of this program, I had made close friends and connections that will be with me for life. Finding community like this has exceeded my expectations.

Thanks to AHP, I’m continuing to make progress toward my goals with the encouragement, support, and resources needed to move forward confidently.

Meet FA -

I’m FA and I’m part of the Spring 2025 Autism Hiring Program (AHP) cohort. I came to the program feeling burnt out, anxious, and overwhelmed at the very mention of employment. After five years of unemployment, I’m thrilled to say AHP helped me navigate my way into employment. It is the amalgamation of employment consultation and emotional support that allowed me to thrive. My employment consultant helped me by introducing me to new online job-search tools, helping me figure out what my wants and needs are in relation to a job, working through barriers and anxieties that come with job-searching and employment, and finding real-life opportunities for me. I am excited to tell you that I have two part-time jobs now. One, as a Professional Organizing Assistant, is a passion of mine and something that will help my long-term career goals. The second is a Developmental Play Partner for autistic children that combines my experience in childcare and my passion for helping autistic people. Through this journey, I felt seen and celebrated as an autistic woman with valuable skills to offer. I have also found a community in my AHP cohort. Discussing challenges and celebrating successes was a really important part of this program and I’m so grateful I was able to experience it. Thank you, AHP, for helping me move forward in such a safe and exciting way.

Meet BK

My name is BK, and I joined the Autism Hiring Program (AHP) with a background in medical writing and music education. Over the summer, I have been teaching private music lessons, and I am now exploring opportunities in the science field where my curiosity and analytical skills can thrive.

I appreciate the support from our weekly peer meetings, which cover various topics aimed at enhancing my skills in the job search process. I found the session discussing the pros and cons of disclosing my autism to potential employers, particularly helpful. My one-on-one sessions with my Employment Consultant have also prepared me for numerous interviews with various employers, including conversations with CEOs.

Recently, I received an offer for a part-time job in the medical industry. These experiences have deepened my understanding of workplace expectations, improved my communication skills, and helped me connect with medical scientists on LinkedIn. I am grateful to AHP for their support and excited about the future as I look forward to bringing my passion to the Medical Science industry.

We’re incredibly grateful to Chris Ospring and his amazing team at Kinder Farm Park for organizing the Disc Golf Doubles Tournament on July 20 to benefit the Autism Society of Maryland (AUSOM)!
