Our volunteers are an essential part of the MUSC Health mission.

In 2025, 2,291 volunteers contributed more than 103,000 hours of service across our enterprise, supporting patients, families, and care teams every day. That impact is equivalent to $3.59 million in contributed service.

From offering comfort and guidance to supporting clinics and programs, their time, compassion, and commitment help make it possible to change what’s possible for the communities we serve.

Thank you, volunteers!

We're wrapping up Mental Wellness Month. As South Carolina continues to face shortages in mental health providers, especially in rural areas, health systems are turning to collaborative care models supported by telehealth to reach more patients. Collaborative care models offer a team-based approach that integrates behavioral health treatment into the primary care setting. Rather than referring patients elsewhere for mental health services, care is coordinated within the primary care office.

“Telehealth has been huge for us in that we are a very rural state,” said Dr. Andrew Alkis, Lead Physician of Behavioral Healthcare Integration Program at MUSC's Center for Telehealth.

“I’ve always been competitive. And, when I play, I play to win. This was no different. I had to apply that same drive to taking care of myself and getting through treatment.”

At 82, lifelong athlete and pickleball competitor Jack Smith faced kidney cancer that couldn’t be treated with surgery due to limited kidney function. At MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, radiation oncologist Dr. Brian Lally used stereotactic body radiation therapy to precisely target the tumor while protecting Smith’s remaining kidney.

After four treatments and a year of monitoring, Smith is now in remission.

Jack Smith’s wife, Mary Margaret, was by his side throughout treatment, along with their two daughters. Staying close to home for care at MUSC Hollings allowed him to remain surrounded by his family, which he credits as a key source of motivation and strength. Now he's back to the life and sport he loves!
