April is Occupational Therapy Month 💛

At The SPOT, occupational therapy means helping children develop the skills they need to participate in everyday activities at home, at school, and in play.

OT focuses on building independence, confidence, and functional skills through play-based, hands-on intervention tailored to each child’s unique needs.

From learning how to:
🧸 regulate emotions
🧠 process and respond to sensory input
✏️ improve fine motor and handwriting skills
👕 get dressed independently
🧩 strengthen attention and play skills
🍽️ tolerate new foods and textures

…occupational therapy meets children right where they are and supports growth in ways that directly impact their daily routines and overall development.

Our OT staff work diligently to ensure therapy is intentional, individualized, and designed to help each child succeed in the environments that matter most.

We are so thankful for our incredible OTs and OTAs who show up every day with patience, creativity, and a whole lot of heart. 🩵

🌼🐝 Spring is buzzing at The SPOT! 🐝🌼

This “bee hive” sensory bin has been a sweet hit in our sessions lately! 🍯 From scooping and sorting to following task cards and building their own beehives, our kiddos have been hard at work while having fun.

Activities like this may look like play (because it is!), but they’re also targeting so many important skills:

✋Fine motor strength & coordination
👀Visual perceptual skills
📋Following directions
🔢Counting skills
⏱️Attention & task persistence
🌈Sensory processing
🧠Problem-solving
🧩Matching skills

Big weekend of learning and growth for our team! 🎉🤩

Our speech-language pathologists, Madalyn & Carlei, spent the weekend completing the Beckman Oral Motor Intervention Workshop to bring even more specialized skills to the children and families we serve!

This evidence-based approach uses assisted movement and stretch reflexes to activate muscle contraction, build strength, and improve range of motion of the lips, jaw, tongue, and soft palate. It also evaluates response to pressure, movement, strength, and coordination.

Here’s how this training will help us better support our clients:

✨ Feeding & Swallowing
• Improves sucking, chewing, and safe swallowing
• Helps reduce slow oral transit and food pocketing

✨ Oral Structure Control
• Strengthens movement of the lips, tongue, cheeks, and jaw

✨ Speech Production
• Supports articulation and speech clarity by strengthening muscles needed for sound production

✨ Sensory & Muscle Response
• Increases oral awareness
• Provides intervention for drooling, tonic bite, and gag reflex challenges

✨ Range of Motion
• Expands movement of the lips, jaw, tongue, and soft palate

This intervention can benefit individuals who experience:
• Drooling
• Oral hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity
• Difficulty managing liquids or solids in the mouth
• Pocketing food
• General oral motor weakness
• Persisting speech sound errors that doesn’t respond to traditional therapies

🌟Graduate SPOTlight🌟

After so much hard work, determination, & bravery, today we’re celebrating a huge milestone in speech & occupational therapy! Every moment of patience & perseverance led to this little boy’s victory.

We’ve watched his confidence grow, his independence bloom, & his voice shine brighter every day! His progress has been incredible. His achievements deserves the biggest celebration! 🎓👏🏼

We’re so proud of how far you’ve come & excited for everything ahead. The future is full of possibilities! 💙

Santa had plenty of help from all of the elves in his workshop yesterday! 🎅🏽❤️

☕️🍪There was hot chocolate & cookies made & served in the North Pole Cafe!

🧸🚂 Toys were built, wrapped, & put in Santa’s red sack!

🦌🌽 His reindeer were fed & fed WELL!

❤️💚 Santa’s Workshop was full of Christmas cheer, laughter, & imaginative play!
