The Lung and Large Intestine meridian organ system become the most active
during fall. It’s important to take deep, cleansing breaths to release stress, clear
your mind, and nurture your physiology. Deep breathing exercises can stimulate
your Lung qi, which supports a strong and robust immune system. You can enhance
your deep breathing by adding “lung opening” essential oils such as pine,
eucalyptus, grapefruit, or frankincense.

As an acupuncturist, I understand that each season is linked with a natural element,
organ, and emotion. For fall, these are: Metal, Lung and Grief
(Metal) Governs organization, communication and protecting boundaries. It also
represents an opportunity to finish up projects and reap the “harvest” of all the hard
work done during the active seasons. (Lung) This organ is associated with the act of
“letting go”. It is susceptible to wind and cold and often advised to wear a scarf
around your neck, especially on windy days. (Grief) This is the emotion that is directly
tied to the Lung. It embodies “letting go” and grieving changes around us. Grief often
feels like a negative emotion, and cleanses us of what is no longer needed in our lives.
The fall is a great time to process your grief rather than letting it stay buried
within.

As we transition into Fall, move away from cold, raw foods. It’s the best time of year to
eat warm and cooked foods. Here are some ideas...hot oatmeal, roasted pears with
honey, oven-roasted vegetables, and cooked squash. You can also add in “warming”
spices such as, garlic, ginger, cinnamon and cardamom. You may also want to add in
“pungent foods” that help nourish your Lung Qi this time of year - cauliflower,
almonds, daikon radish, potatoes, turnip, parsnip, rutabaga, apple, pear, rice, oats,
sesame seeds, onion, garlic, and white peppercorns.
