💡 Doula vs Midwife — Do You Need Both? Here’s What You Should Know

Many expecting families ask: What’s the difference between a doula and a midwife? And more importantly — Do I need both?

✨ A doula focuses solely on you and your partner. From holding your hand through contractions, applying counterpressure, offering ice chips, to emotional reassurance — your doula is your personal guide through labor. Doulas provide non-medical support and are trained to assist in hospitals, birth centers, and home births alike.

👩🏽‍⚕️ A midwife, on the other hand, is a medical provider focused on the health of the baby and ensuring your pregnancy remains low-risk. Midwives offer prenatal care, catch babies, and manage complications when necessary. They can work in hospitals, birth centers, or at home — with some midwives specializing exclusively in out-of-hospital births, water births, and VBACs (vaginal births after cesarean).

🚫 Inductions Shouldn’t Be Routine—They Should Be Medically Necessary 🚫

Thinking about an induction? Before you agree—ask why. Induction of labor increases your risk of a cesarean, especially when it’s not truly needed.

Here’s how to know if your induction is medically necessary:

✔️ Preeclampsia or Gestational Hypertension
✔️ Uncontrolled Gestational Diabetes
✔️ IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction) — often linked to anemia or hypertension
✔️ Fetal Anomalies or Compromised Fetal Wellbeing

👉 If your reason for induction isn’t listed above, it’s likely not medically necessary.

💡Why It Matters:
Pitocin-induced contractions are stronger and more painful than natural oxytocin contractions. Prolonged use can increase fetal stress, boost your chances of needing an epidural, and significantly raise your risk of a C-section.
