Here's a fun fact for your Friday! August is National Immunization Awareness Month, so we're going with a vaccine related fact today.

The first "vaccine" was reported in 1796 when physician Edward Jenner inoculated an 8-year-old boy with Cowpox, a similar virus to Smallpox. Despite some slight symptoms from the exposure, he made a full recovery. Two months later, Jenner inoculated the boy with Smallpox and was found to be immune to it and remained healthy.

Later the term "vaccine" was coined using the Latin word for cow, "v***a" as a nod to the origin of immunizations.

For more on the history of vaccinations, check out this WHO article https://www.who.int/news-room/spotlight/history-of-vaccination/a-brief-history-of-vaccination

Summer is here, and so is the sun and heat that comes with it. If you're planning on spending time outside this summer, we've got some tips for staying safe in the sun. For more info on each tip, keep reading!

☀Wear sunscreen! Use SPF 30 and try to apply at least 30 minutes before you go outside. Reapply at least every 2 hours, more often if you're sweating or getting wet. Be sure to put sunscreen on any exposed skin.

💧Stay hydrated! Aim to drink 8oz of water for every 15-20 minutes you're outside, or 24-32oz every hour. However, don't drink more than 48oz per hour, as this could be damaging to your body.

😎Protect your eyes! UV rays from the sun can damage your eyes, so be sure to wear sunglasses with UV protection. This is especially important if you're going to be on or around sand and water as they can increase your exposure to the UV rays.

👕Wear sun protective clothing! You can find clothing that has UV protection built right in. Unlike sunscreen, there's no need to reapply. Just be sure to still apply sunscreen to any areas not covered by clothing.
