What is Direct Primary Care?
Direct Primary Care (DPC) started from the idea that primary care can be affordable without insurance. You tell the doctor what is going on, and your doctor treats you directly– bypassing your insurance company. You can still use insurance for prescriptions, lab tests, etc., but you have the option of getting these at a wholesale cash pay price – many times less than what your insurance copays may be. You can also still use your insurance to pay for specialist visits, although we are negotiating cash pay rates with these doctors too. The DPC idea has been around for 20 or more years, but is a relatively new concept to Columbia. DPC practices want to make it easy for you to see your doctor! You can schedule your own appointment, walk out of the office with your medications, and save hundreds on lab testing. We like to think of DPC as old-fashioned care, using modern medical treatments.
