Let's dive a little deeper into the H&E Stain:

This stain consists of a basic (Hematoxylin) and acidic (Eosin) component. The basic stain (Hematoxylin) colorizes acidic cellular structures (nuclei and ribosomes) purple. The acidic stain (Eosin) colorizes the basic, positively charged cellular structures (cytoplasm, collagen, and extra cellular matrix) pink/red. Whoever said opposites don't attract?

This week we are going to talk about what an “H&E” stain is.

An H&E stain is the routine histology stain we use to stain all tissue samples. H&E stands for Hematoxylin and Eosin, the two main components used in the stain. This stain is used for primary diagnosis of the tissue sample, additional stains can be ordered as needed to better identify a disease process, but this stain is our gold standard.
