Dichotomy. That's the word that describes what I've been reflecting on today. We live in a world today of constant Judgement. We are incentivized by "all or none thinking ", mostly because it's a quick pathway for the brain. Good and Bad. Virtuous vs Evil. Kind or Rude. The reality is that most parts of life are on a spectrum, and that two things can exist at the same time. I believe the best example of this representation is how we perform in our relationships, particularly in early caregiver attachment styles. Parents get the opportunity to teach their children, "I love you AND I'm disappointed in your behavior ", or "That was not a nice thing to do AND I know you are capable of being kind". This flexible style of thinking creates space for honesty, self-acceptance, and validation of the true experience. As an adult, this plays out as someone who can accept and own accountability of mistakes or performances that don't meet the goal while still maintaining a healthy self-esteem. For those who haven't had the opportunity to engage and learn these tools, it's never too late!! To learn new concepts of behaviors and create new pathways for learning, the brain must be properly fueled. This is one of my favorite "Lunch Breakfasts" packed with protein, microgreens, and pickled vegetables to fuel the brain and feed the Gut. .

During my Yoga Sequence today, My instructor talked about the act of "doing". She spoke about how we are always "doing something". Whether we are moving forward, or staying still, we are constantly in action. As we learn to tolerate stillness, we give our minds the ability to "act" out of wisdom and knowledge, rather than to engage in a continual process of reaction. The difference? An action allows a process of choice, while reaction is an automatic response. Ever notice how you might have developed an automatic response to an behavior, thought or feeling? Over the course of time, even our thoughts become "automatic". The brain is constantly looking for ways to improve efficiency. The problem with this is when our automatic thoughts or behaviors are self-destructive, or unhealthy. The good news is that we are never to old to reconstruct old patterns. What is required however is the "act of stillness". Stillness requires energy pathways just as much as movement does...and more importantly, we need proper sources of nutrition to fuel our brain to support this. "EatYourselftoMentalHealth.

Why is this simple Salad considered Neuroprotective? Science tells us that people who subscribe to "traditional diets " such as the Mediterranean Diet are less likely to suffer from depression? Traditional diets don't contain processed and synthetic ingredients that lead to inflammation. They are nutrient dense in leafy greens vegetables and fruits rich in antioxidants that support a healthy immune system. YOUR GUT comprises the MAJORITY of your immune system.

The Holidays bring about an abundance of emotions. Joy, grief, comfort, shame, and gratitude all ebbing and flowing throughout our seasons of experience. I think it's important to truly experience, acknowledge, and sit with all of these emotions. Because of how the Holidays are characterized, many people feel guilt over the experience of any emotion that has been labeled "negative ". The reality is that there are no negative or positive emotions and that all are necessary to help your mind and body to integrate and make sense of how it is experiencing the world. It's important to resist the urge to "react" to an emotion typically labeled as "negative " and instead become curious. Over time your body will develop capacity to experience these feelings without inciting fear and alarm that sends your nervous system on a cascade of stress signals. How you nourish your body and brain while trying to perform exercises of awareness is essential. I like to blend "comfort foods" such as gluten free grits (I'm from the South) with mind boosting proteins such as wild salmon. This is my take on Fish and Grits. .

During times of uncertainty and feelings of unrest our bodies are supercharged. You may sway between anxiety, depression, and anger. You have the capacity to sit with your feelings, acknowledge them, and tell yourself you are safe despite what you are experiencing emotionally. Eat food that support your nervous system and settle your gut. Set boundaries and seek professional advice if you find yourself needing additional support. www.freedommindwellcare.org
