Many people come to me with complaints of fatigue. There are lots of possible reasons for fatigue and we must consider all of them when searching for the root cause. However, one big one that is often overlooked is blood sugar dysregulation. Blood sugar imbalances can be of low blood sugar, high blood sugar, and swings between the two. When blood sugar tends to be high but a person is not yet diabetic, you will hear the term “Insulin Resistance.”
Insulin Resistance means there is poor glucose uptake into the cells. Insulin’s job is to help glucose enter your cells for energy. With insulin resistance, glucose stays in the bloodstream instead of getting into cells. This means that your cells are kind of “starving” for energy, even if blood sugar is high.
Insulin resistance also often causes spikes and crashes in blood sugar. These swings can lead to sudden exhaustion, brain fog, feeling shaky or weak, needing to nap after meals.
In addition, insulin resistance is associated with low-grade systemic inflammation, which by itself can cause persistent fatigue and malaise.
Yet another major issue is that Insulin Resistance has hormonal effects. For example, it’s closely linked with:
• Cortisol dysregulation (poor adrenal function)
• Thyroid function changes
These issues can make fatigue and exhaustion even worse.
Last but not least, insulin resistance impairs how efficiently cells produce energy (ATP).
If you feel any of the following:
• Feeling exhausted even after a full night’s sleep
• Heavy limbs or “can’t get going” feeling
• Brain fog or trouble concentrating
• Post-meal crashes
• Needing caffeine just to function
There are definitely natural ways to resolve this. Once it has been determined that blood sugar imbalance is an issue for you, then we look at the underlying causes; after that, we determine, based on your own body’s needs, the best way to address this imbalance. It is important to address this issue as early as possible to prevent diabetes.
In conclusion, if you have issues with fatigue and/or exhaustion, and are not sure why, let’s determine the cause and correct the imbalance.
