After I graduated massage school, I accepted an offer for a job with
the Chiropractic office where I had interned. I was also fortunate to get a second part time job as an admin assistant at the school.

In the beginning, my responsibilities at the Admin job were centered around answering the phones (this was before the days of voicemail) where I would either send the call to someone, or take a message on those little “While you were out” Call Message Slip books with the carbon copy.

I would also answer basic admissions questions for people who were inquiring about the program. I had a number of "interesting" phone interactions over the years, but this one in particular stands out in my memory:

ME: Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy, may i help you?

CALLER: (quick talking female voice with what sounded like a pen rapidly tapping on a desk) hi yeah... i wanted to inquire about your program how long is it?

ME: “Hello, yes… the core program is 20 months, and ... “

CALLER inserts: "...ugh..."

ME: ... “we start classes in Jan, May, and Sept with morning and evening classes available. We are COMTTA-accredited post secondary scho…”

CALLER: “okyeahsurebut... i have a question...can you tell me… in the classroom, how do the students actually learn… to… massage? Do they learn on mannequins?”

ME: “Ah… mannequins? Um, no... the students practice on each other... our classmates are our in-class practice clients from the first da…”

CALLER: "WHAT? So everyone is NAKED?”

ME: “No, the students who are receiving the massage are unclothed to their comfort level, and they are always covered by a sheet on the table. Professional boundaries are taught and strictly observ...”

CALLER: “HOLD on… ok THAT is just gross… and really NOT very hygienic is it…? … they DO wear rubber gloves, right?”

ME: “Rubber gloves? Oh, not always… well, rarely actually…. gloves are usually only used if the student practitioner has a wound, or if the client… ”

CALLER: “a WOUND?” she exclaimed, as if this was the last, disappointing straw.

ME: “I can tell you have a lot of questions about Massage Therapy. Have you ever had a professional Massage? The experience might answer a lot of your ques…”

CALLER: “OK, YOU KNOW WHAT? Nevermind… This whole thing is PERVERSE!"

Slams phone.

Me: “ok have a nice day”

32 years ago I leapt off a corporate ladder into the great unknown. At what was a great start into a solid tech career, at a time of growth and expansion in the industry, I… quit. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted but I knew I didn’t want THAT. At 30, I was divorced, broke, and a little broken.

I had been practicing Tai-Chi, Meditation, and Yoga for a few years so I leaned into that, which led me to Jin Shin Do, a form of process-focused acupressure. I was taken by the experience of working one-on-one with people in a meaningful way; the level of honesty, trust, intimacy - is hard to put into words. My experiences with Jin Shin Do confirmed my gut-feeling about my place in the world, or at least, it provided a direction for me to aim for.

So I went to Massage School, for ONE semester, “to try it out” I told myself. Playing it safe, I enrolled in a Jin Shin Do elective that just happened to be offered that semester. This formal study and practice was a much deeper dive for me than I had experienced in a couple of weekend workshops. Once a week I went to class. Every lecture blew my mind, every practice resulted in some sort of therapeutic, somatic experience. I enrolled in the 20-month Massage Therapy Program starting the next semester.

Tales of my 30-plus year journey as a Massage Therapist can wait for my memoirs, but for now, I wanted to post this – my Certificate from the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy, awarded Aug 1994 - to mark the time, and reflect. What comes up for me is deep gratitude towards all the Professors, Teachers, Administrators, Medical Professionals, Martial Artists, Yogis, Elders, Friends, Bodyworkers, and of course Family that helped shape my thinking and my approach. And most important, a deep and humble bow to every client and student that came to love Thai Massage as I do. This path has been a life-long education of heart and spirit. I am blessed to have found it.

These days, I’m seeing clients and scheduling Fall 2025 classes at my office in Mansfield CT... and there’s more to come in 2025! Stay tuned.
