The clinicians in our academy are placed into scenarios that mirror the kinds of experiences that may eventually bring first responders into their offices. The purpose is to give them a realistic sense of the physical and emotional demands of the job by having them work through situations while carrying the weight of our equipment, whether that is bunker gear, a law enforcement vest and duty belt, or EMS equipment. The HOT (hands-on training) tracks are intentionally designed to place clinicians under pressure so they can better appreciate the stressors we face in the field. The goal is not to make them first responders, but to give them relevant exposure to the environments, tasks, and emotional strain that often accompany this work. Through that experience, they gain a stronger understanding of the feelings and reactions that may be tied to these events. Then, when a responder walks into their office and does not know where to begin, the clinician has a more informed starting point for conversation, connection, and care.
