Matt first came to work with me about 3 years ago from his debilitating low back injury that prevented him from lifting without pain. We were able to get some great results together (thanks to 99% his work ethic and determination and 1% of my 2 cents) and he’s been training as hard as ever!! He regularly competes in powerlifting meets and he is also a super cool dude 😎 like many of my followers! (We do have fun whenever he comes by!)

With the nature of powerlifting and his training volume, he does occasionally have areas of discomfort and some room to improve his movement health, so here’s just a subset of what we did recently during his session.

Reverse Hyper for Low Back Resilience

The Reverse Hyperextension (RHE) aims to target the hip extensors (gluteus maximus and hamstrings) and the erector spinae by keeping the upper body immobile. This progression may be helpful for people experiencing low back pain to gradually increase the challenge on core stabilization and glute/hamstring activation.

✅The Reverse Hyper can reduce lumbar flexion while increasing the range of motion in the hips to help improve spine stabilization with the erectors and core musculatures while improving the activation of posterior chain muscles and strengthening them.

❗️One important thing to remember is to keep the spine from moving too much as you lower the legs down.
