It is with profound sadness that the South Carolina Primary Health Care Association (SCPHCA) announces the passing of Ms. Sue Veer, a visionary leader in community health and a longtime
member of our Board of Directors. Sue’s commitment to the community health center movement began when she served as an Associate Director at the SCPHCA in the early to late 2000s, and
it transcended far beyond South Carolina, as evident in her service on the National Association of Community Health Center’s (NACHC) Executive Committee and her leadership of the NACHC 340B Work Group, where she championed health center priorities at the national level.
Sue’s remarkable career in health care spanned more than 40 years, including nearly two decades as President and CEO of Carolina Health Centers, Inc. (CHC) in rural Greenwood, South Carolina.
Under her leadership, the health center grew to include 16 medical practices, pioneering an integrated pediatric medical home model with early childhood services and evidence-based home visitation programs—an enduring testament to her commitment to comprehensive, patient-centered care.
A true warrior and advocate for the mission, she proudly shared the Health Center story at the local, state, and national levels – ensuring that everyone who would listen understood the vital role of
the health center model in expanding access to primary and preventive care across South Carolina and the nation.
Never afraid to voice her passion for the health center movement and its purpose, Sue often expressed the deep purpose she found in her work with community health centers:
"Nothing in the professional realm has brought greater purpose to my life than participating in the process of ensuring everyone has access to comprehensive health care, along with the knowledge
and motivation for them to seek better health and well-being for themselves and those they love and care about."
Sue’s leadership, mentorship, and dedication touched countless lives. Her forward-thinking approach cultivated the next generation of health care advocates, inspired her colleagues with integrity and compassion, and strengthened the Community Health Center movement both in South Carolina and nationwide. Her legacy of service, advocacy, and love for her patients and communities will
continue to guide and inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The SCPHCA extends our deepest condolences to Sue’s family, friends, and colleagues. Her life and work leave an indelible mark on our membership, community, and on the health of countless South Carolinians.
