What a great day representing the South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Association at Disability Advocacy Day at the Statehouse! It was inspiring to see advocates, organizations, and community members come together to speak up for individuals living with disabilities across South Carolina.

A special thank you to Joyce Davis from the Brain Injury Association of South Carolina for allowing us to join her during her “What’s in a Name?” speech. She highlighted the importance of making sure individuals with spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries understand that services and supports are still available to them through the state’s system, even as agencies evolve and change.

Conversations like this remind us how important education, advocacy, and collaboration are in helping individuals and families connect with the resources they need.

Thank you to everyone who showed up today to advocate and support the disability community. 💙

We’re proud to be at the Statehouse today representing the South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Association for Disability Advocacy Day.

Advocacy days like this are incredibly important because they give people living with disabilities, their families, and supporters a chance to be heard directly by the leaders who help shape policies that affect our daily lives. When our community shows up together, it sends a powerful message that accessibility, healthcare, and support services matter.

If you’re here today, keep an eye out for Sherwood or me in the crowd and come say hi — we’d love to connect!

❄️ Freezing Weather Relief for the SCI/D Community in South Carolina ❄️

The South Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Association (SCSCIA) wants to remind our community that disaster relief support is available for individuals with spinal cord injuries or disorders (SCI/D) and wheelchair users in South Carolina during extreme cold and freezing conditions.

Thanks to a grant from United Spinal, we can provide direct financial assistance to help recover from cold weather–related damages or losses. Our goal is to support you in staying safe and regaining stability during this challenging time.

We may be able to assist with:
🏠 Home repairs due to frozen pipes, burst plumbing, or ice damage
🛏️ Evacuation and emergency housing costs if your home becomes unsafe
♿ Replacing or repairing wheelchairs damaged by freezing conditions
📦 Other losses directly caused by freezing weather

✅ Apply online here:
https://scscia.wufoo.com/.../disaster-relief-assistance.../

⚠️ If power or internet outages are expected, print a physical form now to have on hand just in case:
https://www.scspinalcord.org/resources

📬 Completed forms can be mailed to:
SCSCIA
301 Greystone Blvd, Suite 170
Columbia, SC 29016

📩 For questions, contact Rebekka Byrd at info@scspinalcord.org

⚠️ Important Notes:

Applicants must be South Carolina residents. Those outside SC should contact United Spinal or their local SCI chapter.

Funding is limited — applying does not guarantee approval. Assistance will be awarded based on eligibility, demonstrated need, and available resources.

Relief is intended only for disaster-related expenses and may not cover all costs.

💙 We are committed to supporting our community and helping you recover from the impact of freezing weather. Please share this with anyone who may need help. Stay safe, South Carolina — we are here for you!
