The Maury Regional Health Care Foundation, in collaboration with Maury Regional Health, is helping local stroke patients and their families by sponsoring the Retreat & Refresh Stroke Camp. The camp is designed to offer a weekend away from home to improve the quality of life for stroke survivors, caregivers and their families. Nancee Fortner, a past participant at the stroke camp, found it to be one of the most rewarding experiences she has had since her stroke in 2022 and has returned to the camp three times.

“I learned about the stroke camp through the Stroke Support Group at Maury Regional,” said Fortner. “I was reluctant to go at first, but a friend encouraged me. It’s nice to connect with others who understand what you are going through. I got so inspired by being with stroke survivors, and my friend observed that I seemed happier after attending. I appreciate the Foundation for making it possible for me to have a brighter future.”

The next scheduled Retreat & Refresh Stroke camp is October 17-19 at Pickwick Landing State Park in Counce, Tennessee. This camp is the only one in Tennessee and one of only two in the southeast United States. To register, visit unitedstrokealliance.org/programs/about, click ‘find a camp’ and follow the prompts to select the Columbia camp. For more information, please call 931.381.1111, ext. 4350.

After retiring from a 35-year career at the Lawrenceburg Electric System, Carl Wisdom was ready to enjoy the slower pace of life on his family farm. However, just three months into his retirement, his world was turned upside down when a lump on his neck revealed a diagnosis of cancer.

For Wisdom, the cancer on his neck required immediate attention. He underwent an intensive treatment plan that included 35 radiation sessions, seven chemotherapy sessions and multiple follow-up appointments at Maury Regional Cancer Center in Columbia.

After seven weeks of treatment, Wisdom’s cancer was in remission. Today, Wisdom is grateful for the new perspective his cancer journey has brought him.

“Life is short, and you can’t take it for granted,” he said. “My plan was to sit back and watch the grass grow in retirement, but now I can do that with new appreciation.”

Breast cancer survivor Beverly McClarn has been a pillar of support in her community, fighting breast cancer not only once, but twice. Diagnosed in 2003 and again in 2011, Beverly's resilience and dedication to her health are truly remarkable.

Through her unwavering faith and the expert care she received at Maury Regional, her cancer is now in remission. Today, Beverly gives back by advocating for early detection and sharing her story at breast cancer awareness events.

“My daughter was the one who encouraged me to go to the doctor when I felt a small nodule in my left breast,” said McClarn. “She had just learned in school that if there are any unknown bumps or lumps that you should always get them checked out. So, I made an appointment, and I’m so thankful that I did.”
