Mental Health Awareness Month, held every May since 1949, aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and provide support for mental health conditions. It educates the public on the importance of mental well-being, advocates for accessible care, and celebrates recovery journeys while encouraging individuals to seek help and prioritize their mental health.

Key purposes of the month include:
- Reducing Stigma:
Breaking down barriers by fostering open conversations about mental health struggles.
-Educating the Public:
Raising awareness about various mental illnesses, their effects, and available
treatments.
-Promoting Early Intervention:
Highlighting the importance of early detection and intervention to improve quality of life.
-Providing Resources:
Connecting individuals with support tools, such as screening resources, hotlines (e.g.,
988), and community services.
-Advocacy & Support:
Encouraging policy changes for better access to care and supporting individuals and families affected by mental illness.

How to Participate
-Wear Green: Green is the international symbol for mental health awareness,
representing hope and strength.
-Share your Story: Stigma grows in silence. Healing begins in community. This
Mental Health Awareness Month share your story on NAMI.org to help break the
silence. Be the reason someone realizes they don’t have to face this alone.
-Utilize Toolkits: Organizations like SAMHSA and MHA provide digital toolkits
with social media graphics, posters, and educational materials.

-Participate in Events: Many communities host NAMIWalks or local screenings
and workshops to foster dialogue.

Immediate Resources
If you or someone you know is in crisis, support is available 24/7:
-988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 or visit the 988 Lifeline website.
-The Trevor Project: Specialized support for LGBTQ+ youth available at The

Did you catch NAMI in the press?

NAMI South Carolina is bringing together community leaders and mental health professionals for an upcoming event focused on awareness and support in the Aiken and Barnwell areas.

The event, “Ask the Experts,” is set for May 2 at Barnwell Elementary School and will feature a panel of local voices in and around the mental health field. Organizers say the discussion will center on addressing mental health challenges and connecting residents with resources across the region.

The event also marks the kickoff of Mental Health Month, with opportunities for attendees to engage in open conversation and learn more about available support services.

Community members and organizations are invited to participate, with free vendor space available for those looking to share resources.

For more information, contact Deniece Chi at 803-331-3595 or deniece.chi@namisc.org. Additional details can be found on the NAMI South Carolina website.

✨ Team Spotlight: Julie Taylor ✨

Meet Julie Taylor, our Regional Program Facilitator – Lowcountry!

Julie has been with NAMI since August 2025, bringing both passion and personal experience to everything she does. Her journey with mental health is what inspired her to help others feel seen, supported, and understood 💙

Her favorite part of working at NAMI? The people. Julie says her team—especially Laura and Kim—have been incredibly supportive, and she’s loved building those connections along the way.

Outside of work, you’ll find her at church, spending time with family, or taking peaceful walks on the beach 🌊

Julie’s advice for better mental health:
“Know your limits and make time for yourself before you get pushed to the edge.”

We’re so grateful to have Julie making an impact in the Lowcountry community!
