Polk Memorial Gardens Helping One Family At A Time This cemetery, located in Columbia, TN, is more than a basic location for burial. Pet services are also available.

Polk Memorial Gardens has been “Helping One Family at a Time” since 1954, offering a beautiful cemetery where loved ones can be laid to rest. The grounds are landscaped to provide a safe haven where family members can meet as often as they wish to honor the deceased. Polk Memorial Gardens provides a range of burial and memorial services to meet the unique needs and requests of every family. Options include traditional ground burial, or other services such as a columbarium, private mausoleums, and niches. The team is equipped to assist with immediate burial services and can also help with preplanning as desired. Families can choose from a variety of memorials and monuments, including granite monuments and bronze memorials. If cremation is chosen, then the ashes can be scattered in the cremation gardens. Other cremation services include cremation burial, cremation benches, tree memorials, and more. Every service can be customized to match the traditions and desires of the family. For example, the caring cemetery staff can assist with military honors and Veteran service. The cemetery is situated with a peaceful, serene setting, away from the busy road. Acres of rolling green lawns offer lakeside vistas, majestic willow trees, and a cremation water garden. The grounds are designed to give families a peaceful, comfortable place where they can return over and over again to honor and remember the deceased. The staff at Polk Memorial Gardens understand that it is important to visit a loved one, even when mobility becomes more difficult with age. Care has been taken to facilitate mobility through the park, with level grading and convenient walkways. Facilities at the cemetery include a chapel mausoleum, the praying hands garden mausoleum, and most recently the Arbors at Polk Memorial. The perpetual care status means that families can have peace of mind in knowing that the park-like grounds will be maintained for generations. Polk Memorial Gardens is located in Columbia, and also provides services for nearby cities: Mt. Pleasant, Summertown, Hampshire, and Spring Hill. Monday, we came together as a community to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Our Memorial Day service at Polk Memorial Gardens was a moving tribute, filled with reflection, gratitude, and unity.

Here are few photos from the ceremony — the solemn procession of our flag bearers, the peaceful beauty of the Arbors , and the serene grounds that offered a fitting place of remembrance.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in paying tribute. May we always remember that freedom is never free.

Join us this Memorial Day at Polk Memorial Gardens as we honor the courageous men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country. This community event will feature messages of remembrance from two distinguished guest speakers. It will include music by Jenifer Kitchens, Wilson and Charlene Henderson and the men of Praise 10.

Guest Speaker: Deacon Conrad J. Donarski

Originally from northwest Minnesota, Conrad J. Donarski—better known as C.J.—joined the U.S. Marine Corps at 18, looking for sunshine and new beginnings. What followed was a 30-year career in the Marines, retiring as a Master Gunnery Sergeant. After leaving active duty, C.J. worked at Eternal Hills Cemetery in Oceanside, CA, but was soon called back to serve military families as the Exceptional Family Member Coordinator at Camp Pendleton.

C.J. went on to become a Catholic deacon, serving both Camp Pendleton and St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish. Today, he is a Board-Certified Chaplain with the Veterans Administration, working at the York Campus in Murfreesboro, TN. He and his wife, Lady Alice, now live in Spring Hill and enjoy being closer to their six children and 11 grandchildren. C.J. also serves as one of three deacons at St. Henry Catholic Parish in Nashville.

Guest Speaker: John Carlen

John Carlen began his military journey in 1966, enlisting in the Marine Corps and completing boot camp in San Diego. He went on to serve with 1st Marine Battalion, Mike Company in Vietnam, participating in seven major combat operations. He was wounded in action during Operation DeSoto and was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery.

Following Vietnam, he served in a Combined Action Company (CAC) unit, and later as a Corporal at Camp Lejeune, eventually being promoted to 2nd Budgetary Chief Sergeant. John received an honorable discharge in 1969 and continued to serve in the New Jersey Marine National Guard Reserves until 1972.
