"The care team helped me recover quickly, and the nurses and nursing assistants/techs were consistently professional, supportive and compassionate."

After Myrtle Beach resident Adam Willard was diagnosed with re**al cancer, he turned to MUSC Hollings Cancer Center Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgeon Dr. Colleen Ashley Donahue and team for treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation and tumor removal, last November. Four days later, he was back home.

Today, Adam is continuing his recovery with milestones already behind him, including the removal of his port.

At 34, William Burr was shocked to learn that symptoms he thought were minor were actually stage 3 re**al cancer.

At MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, a multidisciplinary team quickly developed an aggressive treatment plan, guiding him through radiation and chemotherapy while he continued working and caring for his young family.

After completing treatment, Burr received the news he had hoped for: no evidence of disease. His experience underscores the rise of colore**al cancer in younger adults and the importance of paying attention to symptoms and seeking care early.

"The care I received can only be called heroic."

At 69, Patty Lancos was hospitalized with severe heart failure and placed on life support when she wasn’t eligible for a transplant. MUSC Health Cardiologist Dr. Houston used the Impella CP, a small heart pump, to help her heart rest and recover while her family prepared for the worst.

But Patty had other plans.

With her family by her side, she rallied. Today, she’s back to enjoying retirement, traveling and spending time with her six grandchildren. And this spring, she and her husband are setting off on a 12-day cruise from Venice to Athens.

"Medical technology, and the wonderful doctors and nurses and technicians who utilize this technology, is amazing. I want to thank you for what you do to help patients like me. Never underestimate your impact. My recovery is the miracle that so many of my family and friends prayed for. So, thank you. Thank you."

New research from the Medical University of South Carolina is challenging assumptions about fish oil and brain health. In a first-of-its-kind study, MUSC scientists found that certain components of fish oil may impair the brain’s ability to heal after repeated mild traumatic brain injury.

Led by Dr. Thompson Barr, the program makes it easier to catch issues early and adjust treatment quickly. Because hypertension often has no symptoms, consistent monitoring is key to preventing serious conditions like stroke, heart attack and heart failure.

Debra Campbell, inventory manager/coordinator at MUSC Health Florence Medical Center, thought her exhaustion was just part of a busy life. But when she mentioned it at a routine checkup, her doctor ordered tests that revealed something far more serious: colon cancer.

Now 25 years cancer-free, Campbell shares her story to encourage others to pay attention to symptoms like fatigue, anemia, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss or lasting changes in bowel habits.
