On Friday March 20th, Governor Parson issued a new ruling about the number of people that can gather in one place at a time, limiting the number to 10. I would like to let all of my patients know that my office has been, and will continue to be in compliance with this new rule. We also will continue the CDC recommended disinfection schedule as well as all other reasonable safety precautions. Thank for your support - Dr Johnson.

I'd like to take this opportunity to inform all of our patients that we still currently are open and will be seeing patients during our normal hours of operation. We will maintain our current hygiene and sanitation / disinfection schedule to protect ourselves and the public. What are the ways that food can negatively affect us?

We can have three negative reactions to food:

1. Food Allergy- you will know quickly when this occurs. Causes swelling, and / or hives, and / or trouble breathing.
2. Food Intolerance- lactose (milk sugar) is a prime example. Some people lack the ability to digest lactose which means it can cause gas, bloating, and diarrhea in those people
3. Food Sensitivity- the most common of all of these. Effects are noticed up to two days after eating the problem food. Can cause headache, fatigue, bloating, muscle aches, lowered immune function, and other problems. Often goes undiagnosed for years as many doctors don't test for this.

Do you suffer from sinus infections every year? Here are a few things to help fight this:

Hand sanitizers have become popular, but are they really all that effective? Yes and NO. They DO kill bacteria on your skin. However, they DO NOT kill ALL bacteria. The bacteria that survive can GRAB the DNA from the dead bacteria and use this to mutate to a different ("stronger") strain. Aka SUPERBUG! Washing hands is preferred because soap loosens the fatty cell membrane of the bacteria from your skin. When this happens many of the bacteria are washed down the drain where they cannot cause harm. Also, soap and warm water are free of hormone disrupting chemicals that are found in many hand sanitizers.

What are proven cold and flu remedies?
-Echinacea ROOT (only root works). This has been used by Native Americans for hundreds of years and has been shown to increase white blood cell production
-Vitamin C. Yes this does work. Linus Pauling, Nobel prize winner and biochemist showed that your immune cells suck up as much vitamin C as you can give them. These cells use it to to help attack viruses and bacteria
-Zinc. Zinc helps to keep viruses from making copies in the body. This is why zinc lozenges are a mainstay.

Using these approaches, receiving acupuncture, getting adjusted, and getting lots of rest and fluids is the best medicine for viral infections.

So the flu shot was not a good match this year. What can we do to help increase our resistance to influenza? 1) Make sure you are getting enough vitamin D, 2) get enough sleep every night, 3) wash your hands with soap and water (not Purell) after being around those infected with flu so that the virus goes down the drain, 4) increase your vitamin C consumption and brightly colored fruits and veggies, and 5) drink green tea- its antiviral!
